Old Ironsides (trophy)
Old Ironsides was the trophy awarded for the three-way List of NCAA college football rivalry games, college football rivalry between Penn State Nittany Lions football, Pennsylvania State University, Pittsburgh Panthers football, The University of Pittsburgh, and West Virginia Mountaineers football, West Virginia University. Although Old Ironsides is the most distinctive aspect of the rivalry, the trophy was long predated by the significance of the universities' collegiate football matches. In 1984, staff from the Penn State Athletics Department informed their counterparts at Pittsburgh and West Virginia that the trophy went missing at some point while in Penn State's possession. The resulting searches yielded no trace and the Old Ironsides trophy was lost. As a result of the reduced frequency of competitions between the schools and the disappearance of Old Ironsides, the triangular rivalry is largely viewed in the scope of the individual head-to-head rivalries and not a unified ... The 1907 Western University of Pennsylvania football team was an American football team that represented Western University of Pennsylvania (later renamed the University of Pittsburgh) as an independent during the 1907 college football season. Schedule Season recap On February 9, 1907 the Western University of Pennsylvania Athletic Committee hired Yale graduate John A. Moorehead as head football coach for the 1907 season. Mr. Moorehead was originally hired as an assistant line coach on October 29, 1906. Frank Rugh, former WUP player and 1904 Law School grad, was the assistant coach. When 1906 team captain Gil Miller became ill, Cal Marshall was appointed his replacement and did a commendable job. The 1935 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1935 college football season. In its 12th season under head coach Jock Sutherland, the team compiled a 7–1–2 record, shut out six of its ten opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 135 to 28. The 1930 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1930 college football season. In its seventh season under head coach Jock Sutherland, the team compiled a 6–2–1 record, shut out five of its nine opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 186 to 69.
