Old Horse Springs, New Mexico
Old Horse Springs is an unincorporated community in Catron County, New Mexico, United States. It is 20 miles northeast of Aragon and 20 miles west of Datil. To the west of Horse Springs is the Continental Divide, then South to the Plains of San Agustin. History Old Horse Springs had a post office from 1879 to 1882. The town's name originated when soldiers traveling from Fort Tularosa to Socorro lost a horse. Aragon is a census-designated place on the Tularosa River in Catron County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 94. It is located northeast of Apache Creek. History Old Fort Tularosa Aragon is on the site of former Old Fort Tularosa , which was built in 1872 to protect the Apache Indian Agency from the Ojo Caliente Band of Apaches. The fort was abandoned when the tribe was moved back to the Ojo Caliente reservation in 1874. A stockade was built on the site of the earlier fort in 1880 by Buffalo Soldiers led by Sergeant George Jordan. Jordan eventually received the Medal of Honor for leading 25 men to repulse a force of more than 100 Indians in the Battle of Fort Tularosa. The Plains of San Agustin (sometimes listed as the Plains of San Augustin) is a region in the southwestern U.S. state of New Mexico in the ''San Agustin Basin,'' south of U.S. Highway 60. Datil, New Mexico
Datil is a census-designated place in Catron County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 54. Located at the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and New Mexico State Road 12, Datil is on the edge of the Cibola National Forest. The Very Large Array is also nearby. History Datil is named after the nearby Datil Mountains. The name of the mountains came in turn from the Spanish word '' dátil'', meaning “date”; the name most likely resulted from the fruit-like appearance of the seedpods of local yucca species. The town lay along the Magdalena Stock Driveway.
