Old Custom House (Cairo, Illinois)
The Old Custom House is a historic government building in downtown Cairo, Illinois. Built from 1869 to 1872, the building served as a customs house, post office, and courthouse. Alfred B. Mullett, the U.S. Supervising Architect at the time, designed the building in the Italianate style, a rarity among federal buildings; his design features a bracketed cornice and rounded windows. When Cairo built a new post office in 1942, the building became the town's police station. The building is one of the few surviving U.S. custom houses and one of the largest federal buildings of its era in the Mid-Mississippi Valley region. The custom house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1973. It now serves as a history museum. Old Custom House (Yorktown, Virginia)
The Old Custom House is a historic customs house located at Yorktown, York County, Virginia. It was built in 1721, and is a 2 1/2-story brick Colonial building with a hipped roof. It has a corbeled brick interior end chimney. An extensive restoration project was undertaken by Richmond architect W. Duncan Lee in 1929. Also on the property are a contributing kitchen, necessary, and brick wall, all added during the restoration. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The Custom House is now a museum operated by the Comte de Grasse Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. It is open on Sundays from June to October. The Old Customs House, also called the Old Post Office, is a historic building located at the corner of Clinch Avenue and Market Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. Completed in 1874, it was the city's first federal building. It housed the federal courts, excise offices and post office until 1933. From 1936 to 1976, it was used by the Tennessee Valley Authority for offices. Expanded in 2004, the building is home to the East Tennessee History Center, which includes the Lawson McGhee Library's Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, the Knox County Archives, and the East Tennessee Historical Society's headquarters and museum. The Old Customs House is a building in Fremantle, Western Australia that was built in 1908 to house the main branch of the Customs Department of Western Australia. It is one of only a handful of extant Customs Houses in the state; others are in Albany, Broome, Cossack, and Geraldton. History It was built on the corner of Cliff Street and Phillimore Streets on the site of the old railway station, a location selected by William Lyne (and recommended by the Fremantle Citizens League). The Old Customshouse is a historic government building at 516 North King Street in Wilmington, Delaware. It was built in 1855 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. History Originally, Delaware's custom house existed in New Castle, but it was moved to a small rented building on Water Street in Wilmington around 1800. In 1837, the First Board of Trade came into existence to promote trade through the port of Wilmington. As one of their first actions, the organization sent a petition to Congress asking for a permanent custom house. Representative George R. Riddle secured appropriations for what was intended to be a dedicated customs house in 1852 which was completed in 1855.
