Cortez High School, at 121 E. First St. in Cortez, Colorado, was built in 1909 and operated as a school until 1968. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It was Cortez' old high school, most recently Calkins Jr. High School. Cortez () is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 8,766 at the 2020 United States Census. History In 1886, the town was built to provide housing for the men working on the tunnels and irrigation ditches required to divert water out of the Dolores River and into Montezuma Valley. The town was named for Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. It is a popular stop for tourists, who stay there because of its central location among surrounding attractions, such as Mesa Verde National Park, Monument Valley, and the Four Corners. Montezuma-Cortez High School
Montezuma-Cortez High School (M-CHS) is a public senior high school located in Cortez, Colorado, United States, serving 721 students in grades 9–12. It is part of the Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1. The first high school was constructed in Cortez in 1909. The Cortez School (known also as the Calkins School) became a junior high school in 1946, when Montezuma County High School opened. The next Montezuma-Cortez High School was constructed on 14-acres in 1967, and the old high school became the middle school. The Calkins School served as an administration building. The new $33.9 million high school broke ground December 21, 2013 on a 35-acres site and was completed in the summer of 2015 through generous donations and grants from the community and state.
