Old Baptist Cemetery
Old Baptist Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Yarmouth, Maine, United States.''Ancient North Yarmouth and Yarmouth, Maine 1636-1936: A History'', William Hutchison Rowe (1937) Dating to the late 17th century, it stands on Hillside Street (formerly named Brimstone Hill or Byram's Hill), adjoining the North Yarmouth and Freeport Baptist Meetinghouse, a National Register of Historic Places property, on its southern side. It is the only burial site in the town attached to an extant church building. The meetinghouse was completed in 1796, but there are burials in the cemetery dating to the late 17th century and early 18th century. The earliest discovered burial is that of Jacob Mitchell Sr. (1643–1675). In 2011, the previously unmarked 1870 grave site of Private William Johnson was formally dedicated at the cemetery. Yarmouth, Maine
Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. When originally settled in 1636, as North Yarmouth, it was part of Massachusetts, and remained as such for 213 years. In 1849, twenty-nine years after Maine's admittance to the Union as the twenty-third state, it was incorporated as the Town of Yarmouth. Cushing And Hannah Prince House
The Cushing and Hannah Prince House is a historic house at 189 Greely Road in Yarmouth, Maine. Built in 1785 and substantially remodeled about 1830, it is a fine local example of a rural Federal period farmhouse with Greek Revival features. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Description and history The Prince House stands in far western Yarmouth, on the northeast side of Greely Road, just north of Maxfield Brook. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a side-gable roof, central chimney, clapboard siding, and a granite block foundation. A long single-story ell extends to the rear. The main facade is five bays wide, with a central entrance that is framed by sidelight windows and pilasters, with an elliptical fanlight above. Forest Paper Company
Forest Paper Company was a pulp and paper mill on the Royal River in Yarmouth, Maine, United States, which was in business between 1874 and 1923. It was the first of its kind in New England. In 1909, it was the largest such mill in the world, employing 275 people. It produced 80 tons of poplar pulp each day. Frederic E. Gore (1860–1930) was a 19th- and 20th-century chemist from Yarmouth, Maine. He became the manager of the Forest Paper Company, which was in business between 1874 and 1923. Ammi Storer (1811 – July 4, 1874) was an American merchant. He was prominent in today's Yarmouth, Maine, where a street is now named for him. He also worked in Boston, Massachusetts. Early life Storer was born in 1811 to Amos Storer and Sally True. He was their second son, after William. Career Storer was the first owner of a business in the brick building at today's 108 Main Street, at its intersection with Portland Street,''Images of America: Yarmouth'', Hall, Alan M., Arcadia (2002) in what was then North Yarmouth, Massachusetts. In July 1849, Storer wrote a petition to the Maine Legislature to divide North Yarmouth and create a new town. It was a repeat of a request from 1828. Nathaniel Foster (1781 – December 27, 1853) was a 19th-century American potter and merchant. Life and career Foster was born in Massachusetts in 1781. He moved north to coastal North Yarmouth, Maine (now Yarmouth), where he established a pottery business on Gooches' Lane (today's East Elm Street). In 1804, he married Rebecca Swasey, with whom he had twelve known children, including daughters Diantha Heald (in 1809) and Mary (1807). Mary died in 1823, aged fifteen or sixteen; Diantha died in 1852, aged 42 or 43. She married John Corliss, another potter, in 1831. William Reed Stockbridge (June 29, 1782 – January 3, 1850) was an American merchant, ship owner and town treasurer who was active in coastal North Yarmouth, Massachusetts (now in Maine), in the 19th century. Thomas Green (June 3, 1761 – May 29, 1814) was an American Baptist minister who served as the first pastor of the North Yarmouth and Freeport Baptist Meetinghouse in what was then North Yarmouth, Massachusetts (now Yarmouth, Maine). Life and career Green was born on June 3, 1761, in Worcester, Province of Massachusetts Bay, to John Green and Mary Osgood, one of their three children. His mother died before his first birthday, and his father remarried, to Mary Ruggles, with whom he had ten more children.
