Oklahoma City Chiefs Football
The Oklahoma City Chiefs football program represented Oklahoma City University and its predecessor institutions in college football. The team began play in 1905 representing Epworth University as the Epworth Methodists. Epworth closed in 1911 was replaced by Oklahoma Methodist University located in Guthrie, Oklahoma, which the football team represented from 1911 to 1916 as Oklahoma Methodist. After a hiatus during the World War I years, the team returned to play in 1921 as the Oklahoma City Goldbugs. Oklahoma Methodist University had relocated to Oklahoma City in 1919 as was renamed as Oklahoma City College. The school adopted its current name in 1924. The football team was known as the Goldbugs through 1941. After another hiatus during World War II, the football team returned to competition in 1946 as the Chiefs. Taft Stadium
Taft Stadium is a WPA-built stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It is the current home to teams from Northwest Classen High School, John Marshall High School, Classen School of Advanced Studies, Oklahoma Centennial High School, as well as a professional soccer team, Oklahoma City Energy FC. Built in 1934, the stadium closed in 2013 and reopened in 2015 following substantial renovation. As part of the renovation the seating capacity was reduced from approximately 18,000 to approximately 7,500, with the red-stone facade being the only feature left unaltered. A new all-weather track replaced a dirt track which was installed in 1946. In addition to the high school uses for which it was designed, Taft Stadium also briefly hosted professional football games in 1968 as home of the Oklahoma City Plainsmen of the Continental Football League. Glass Bowl (game)
The Glass Bowl was an annual post-season college football bowl game played from 1946 to 1949. It was held at the University of Toledo's Glass Bowl. Toledo had been a manufacturing center for glass objects, including automotive glass for nearby Detroit factories. Wayne Kohn, a shipyard worker at a Toledo glass company suggested to municipal leaders a "Glass Bowl" would be a way to build the city's and industry's prestige. The University of Toledo made the announcement of the new bowl game at a press conference in New York City on October 25, 1946. The University of Toledo operated the Glass Bowl Game as part of its regular schedule. In the four seasons of 1946 through 1949, Toledo had winning records going into the December date. The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team based in Philadelphia. The 1949 National Football League Draft was held on December 21, 1948, at The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. The draft was preceded by a secret draft meeting held November 15, 1948, at the Hotel Schenley in Pittsburgh. The Boston Yanks were a National Football League team based in Boston, Massachusetts, that played from 1944 to 1948. The team played its home games at Fenway Park. Any games that conflicted with the Boston Red Sox baseball schedule in the American League were held at Braves Field of the cross-town National League team, the Boston Braves. Team owner Ted Collins, who managed singer and television show host Kate Smith (1907–1986) for thirty years, picked the name Yanks because he originally wanted to run a team that played at New York City's old Yankee Stadium. The Yanks could manage only a 2–8 record during their first regular season. Because of a shortage of players caused by World War II, the Yanks were temporarily merged with the erratic founding APFA member Dayton Triangles' franchise, then known as the Brooklyn Tigers, for the 1945 season, and styled as just the Yanks with no home city named.
