Ohr Somayach (book)
Ohr Somayach is a commentary on Mishneh Torah, authored by Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk. Overview The book, published in 1925, a year before its author's death, presents original understandings on Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. Meir Simcha Of Dvinsk
Meir Simcha of Dvinsk (1843–1926) was a rabbi and prominent leader of Orthodox Judaism in Eastern Europe in the early 20th century. He was a kohen, and is therefore often referred to as ''Meir Simcha ha-Kohen'' ("Meir Simcha the Kohen"). He is known for his writings on Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, which he titled '' Ohr Somayach'', as well as his novellae on the Torah, titled ''Meshech Chochma''. Biography Meir Simcha was born in Butrimonys ( yi, Baltrimantz), Lithuania, to Samson Kalonymus, a local wealthy merchant. According to family tradition, his later success in Torah study was attributed to two blessings his parents had received from local rabbis before his birth. He received his education locally, and managed to evade the regular roundups of Jewish boys that were being held as a result of the Cantonist decrees that had been in effect since 1827. Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem
Ohr Somayach (also Or Samayach or Ohr Somayach International) is a yeshiva based in Jerusalem founded in 1970 catering mostly to young Jewish men, usually of college age, who are already interested in learning about Judaism. It is known as a "baal teshuva" yeshiva since it caters to Jews with little or no background in Judaism, but with an interest in studying the classic texts such as the Talmud and responsa. Students are recruited either locally or from other countries where the yeshiva has established branches, such as in the United States, Canada, South Africa, United Kingdom, Australia, Ukraine and Russia. Ohr Somayach, Monsey
Ohr Somayach, Monsey (officially titled the Ohr Somayach Tanenbaum Educational Center) was an accredited men's college of Judaic studies offering both full and part-time programs. Its curriculum was designed to provide students with an appreciation for and understanding of classical Jewish texts and Jewish philosophy and from an Orthodox Jewish perspective. In addition, the yeshiva ran an outreach program called Legacy Retreats and hosted family getaways and retreats in its Beit Shvidler Conference center. History In 1977, the Ohr Somayach yeshiva in Jerusalem, Israel established an American campus in Yonkers, New York. After two years, Rabbi Ezriel Tauber together with a group of lay leaders purchased land in Monsey, New York to service a full-time Judaic learning center. Ohr Somayach, South Africa
Ohr Somayach in South Africa is an affiliate of Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem, a network of Haredi yeshivas and Synagogues. Like its parent institution, it focuses on educating baal teshuvas ("returnees" to Orthodox Judaism). It has branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Johannesburg's main campus, in Glenhazel, was founded by Dayan Boruch Rapoport, Rabbi Shmuel Moffson and Rabbi Larry Shain. it includes a full-time Yeshiva, headed by Rabbi Shimon Wolpe. Its Bet Midrash was established in 1990, and its Kollel, '' Toras Chaim'', in 1996 which is currently headed by Rabbi Yechezkil Auerbach and Rabbi Yoel Smith ; it operates the ''Ma'ayan Bina'' Midrasha.
