Ohio Collaborative
The Ohio Collaborative is a twelve-person panel in Ohio that establishes statewide standards for law enforcement agencies. The result of recommendations from a task force created by Ohio Governor John Kasich, the Ohio Collaborative is co-chaired by Director of Public Safety John Born and former Ohio Senator Nina Turner. Other members of the collaborative include representatives from law enforcement, community members, and legislators. The Ohio Collaborative's initial recommendations were on guidelines for use of force and employee recruitment. The panel has since published standards on bias free policing, body worn cameras, community engagement, and telecommunicator training. The recommendations put forth by the Ohio Collaborative are not compulsory. Agencies that choose to comply with the guidelines are considered to be "certified" by the Collaborative, are issued certificates, and are listed on the Ohio Collaborative website. John Kasich
John Richard Kasich Jr. ( ; born May 13, 1952) is an American politician, author, and television news host who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 2001 and as the 69th governor of Ohio from 2011 to 2019. A Republican, Kasich unsuccessfully sought his party's presidential nomination in 2000 and 2016. Kasich grew up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, moving to Ohio to attend college. After a single term in the Ohio Senate, he served nine terms as a member of the United States House of Representatives from . His tenure in the House included 18 years on the House Armed Services Committee and six years as chairman of the House Budget Committee. Kasich was a key figure in the passage of both 1996 welfare reform legislation and the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Kasich decided not to run for re-election in 2000 and ran for president instead. Nina Turner
Nina Hudson Turner ( Hudson; born December 7, 1967) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, she was a Cleveland City Council member from 2006 to 2008 and a member of the Ohio Senate from 2008 until 2014. Turner was the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State in 2014, but lost in the general election against incumbent Jon Husted, receiving 35.5 percent of the vote. Her politics have been variously described as progressive, left-wing, or far-left. Turner supported Bernie Sanders in his 2016 presidential campaign, and became president of the Sanders-affiliated group Our Revolution in 2017. She served as a national co-chair of Sanders's 2020 presidential campaign. Turner ran in the Democratic primary for 2021 special election for Ohio's 11th congressional district, and conceded the race after losing to Shontel Brown by a margin of 5.66% of the vote. Use Of Force
The use of force, in the context of law enforcement, may be defined as the "amount of effort required by police to compel compliance by an unwilling subject". Use of force doctrines can be employed by law enforcement officers and military personnel on guard duty. The aim of such doctrines is to balance the needs of security with ethical concerns for the rights and well-being of intruders or suspects. Stark County Sheriff's Office
The Stark County Sheriff's Office is a law enforcement agency which serves Stark County, Ohio, United States. The county is 575 square miles and has a population of 375,432 and the county seat is Canton, Ohio. Strip search lawsuits A local woman, Hope Steffey, sued the Sheriff's Office, claiming that male and female deputies used excessive force and assaulted her when they stripped her naked after she was arrested. Hope Steffey had called the police after she had been assaulted. Television station WKYC obtained video of the incident from Hope Steffey's attorney, shows male and female deputies forcefully removing the clothing of the handcuffed woman, before leaving her to sit naked in a cell for six hours. Police allege that Steffey had threatened to harm herself when asked if she was suicidal, to which she replied in the affirmative.
