Ogdensburg And Lake Champlain Railroad
The Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad was founded in 1849 as the Northern Railroad running from Ogdensburg to Rouses Point, New York. The railroad was leased by rival Central Vermont Railroad for several decades, ending in 1896. It was purchased in 1901 by the Rutland Railroad and became its Ogdensburg Division. History Chartering and Construction The Northern Railroad was incorporated on May 14, 1845 for the purpose of connecting Ogdensburg on the St. Lawrence River to Rouses Point on Lake Champlain. An organizational meeting held in Ogdensburg in June, 1845 elected George Parish (later Baron von Senftenburg) as president, S. S. Walley as treasurer, James G. Hopkins as secretary, and Col. Charles L. Schiatter as chief engineer-superintendent. Madrid ( ) is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York. The population was 1,735 at the time of the 2010 census. The town is named after the capital of Spain. Madrid is in the northern part of the county, north of Canton. Madrid-Waddington Central School serves the town of Madrid, but outside the population center. Ellenburg is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,743 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the daughter of the principal proprietor. Ellenburg is on the western border of the county and is northwest of Plattsburgh. The southern part of the town is situated in the Adirondack Park. History The area was first settled around 1800. Ellenburg is named for Ellen Murray, the daughter of John R. Murray, a landowner. The town was formed from part of the town of Mooers in 1830. Chateaugay is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 2,155. The name is derived from a location in France, which was applied to a local land grant. Within the town is a village also named Chateaugay. The town is located in the northeastern corner of the county. History The first settlement took place in 1796. The town was formed in 1799 before Franklin County was established, from parts of the towns of Champlain and Plattsburgh. By 1802, Chateaugay comprised most of Franklin County. Burke is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 1,465 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northeastern part of the county, northeast of Malone, the county seat. The town is an interior town located in the north-central part of the county. History The town was formed from part of the town of Chateaugay in 1805. The town was originally named "Harison", after Richard Harison, who had purchased the land and founded the town.
