Masataka Ogawa
was a Japanese chemist mainly known for the claimed discovery of element 43 (later known as technetium), which he named nipponium. In fact, he might have discovered, but misidentified, element 75 (later called rhenium). After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he studied under William Ramsay in London, where he worked on the analysis of the rare mineral thorianite. He extracted and isolated a small amount of an apparently unknown substance from the mineral, which he announced as the discovery of element 43, naming the newly discovered element ''nipponium''. He published his results in 1909 and a notice was also published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. For this work, he was awarded a doctorate and the highest prize of the Tokyo Chemical Society. However, no other researchers were able to replicate his discovery, and the announcement was forgotten. Ogawa Suketada (小川 祐忠; 1549–1601) was a ''daimyō'' (warlord) in feudal Japan during the Azuchi–Momoyama and Edo periods. Initially Suketada served Akechi Mitsuhide. He participated in 1582 at the Battle of Yamasaki. After Mitsuhide defeat, he served Shibata Katsutoyo at Battle of Shizugatake. After Katsutoyo died, Suketada served Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Invasion of Shikoku. He was given 70,000 koku at Imabari, Iyo Province and became a daimyo. In 1600, at the Battle of Sekigahara, initially he was part of "Western Army" of Ishida Mitsunari. (25 June 1935 - 7 February 1992) was a Japanese documentary film director. Ogawa and Noriaki Tsuchimoto have been called the "two figures hattower over the landscape of Japanese documentary." Career Ogawa began his career at Iwanami Productions (Iwanami Eiga) making PR (public relations) films alongside other important directors such as Tsuchimoto, Kazuo Kuroki, Yōichi Higashi, and Susumu Hani. Seiji Ogawa (小川 誠二 ''Ogawa Seiji'', born January 19, 1934) is a Japanese biophysicist and neuroscientist known for discovering the technique that underlies Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). He is regarded as the father of modern functional brain imaging. He determined that the changes in blood oxygen levels cause its magnetic resonance imaging properties to change, allowing a map of blood, and hence, functional, activity in the brain to be created. This map reflected which neurons of the brain responded with electrochemical signals to mental processes. He was the first scientist who demonstrated that the functional brain imaging is dependent on the oxygenation status of the blood, the BOLD effect. The technique was therefore called blood oxygenation level-dependent or BOLD contrast.
