Oga Peninsula
The Oga Peninsula (男鹿半島 ''Oga-hantō'') is a rugged peninsula which projects west into the Sea of Japan from the coast of Akita in northern Honshū, the main island of Japan. Politically it coincides with the city of Oga. At the base of the peninsula is Hachirōgata, formerly the second largest lake in Japan. Oga Peninsula is famous for the traditional festival of Namahage. The Sea of Japan is the marginal sea between the Japanese archipelago, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the mainland of the Russian Far East. The Japanese archipelago separates the sea from the Pacific Ocean. Like the Mediterranean Sea, it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean. Hachirōgata
is a lake in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan. Its formal name is , but it is also called . At 4 meters below sea level, Hachirōgata is the lowest natural point in Japan. Hachirōgata was the second-largest lake in Japan after Lake Biwa. Extensive reclamation began in 1957 for crop production, and Ōgata village was established on the reclaimed land on October 1, 1964. The remaining lake has an area of (18th largest in Japan). Some regard the reclamation as a mistake, since Japan began to be bothered with surplus rice soon after the completion of the reclamation. The are demonlike beings portrayed by men wearing hefty ''oni'' (ogre) masks and traditional straw capes (''mino'') during a New Year's ritual, in local northern Japanese folklore of the Oga Peninsula area of Akita Prefecture. Oga Quasi-National Park
is a quasi-national park on the Oga Peninsula, in Akita Prefecture, in far northwestern Japan. The park is wholly within the city of Oga. It is rated a protected landscape (Category V) according to the IUCN. The area was designated a quasi-national park on May 15, 1973. Like all quasi-national parks in Japan, the park is managed by the local prefectural government; in this case, that of Akita prefecture. Oga Aquarium Gao
, officially Akita Prefectural Oga Aquarium, is an aquarium located along Oga Peninsula coast, Oga, Akita Prefecture, Japan. GAO stands for Globe, Aqua and Ocean, and sounds like an Oga-native Namahage shout. Overview Overlooking the Sea of Japan, it keeps and displays over 10,000 marine organisms, including those from Akita Prefecture's abundant marine resources and over 400 species of rare aquatic animals from around the world.
