Oey Bian Kong
Oey Bian Kong, Kapitein der Chinezen ( zh, t=黃綿光, poj=Ûiⁿ Biân Kong) was a prominent Chinese-Indonesian bureaucrat who served from 1791 until 1800 as the 20th '' Kapitein der Chinezen'' of Batavia (now Jakarta, capital of Indonesia), and the last under the Dutch East India Company, which was dissolved in 1799. This post was the most senior in the Chinese civil bureaucracy that governed the local Chinese community as part of the Dutch colonial system of 'indirect rule'. Life Born in Java, Oey was the son of the poet-bureaucrat Oey Tje, who was installed as Kapitein der Chinezen of Semarang, Central Java in 1753. Oey Bian Kong's career as a bureaucrat started with his appointment as ''Boedelmeester'', or State Trustee for insolvent estates, by a Resolution of June 1, 1778. Central Java
Central Java ( id, Jawa Tengah) is a province of Indonesia, located in the middle of the island of Java. Its administrative capital is Semarang. Oey (pronounced "wee" ) () is a Chinese Indonesian surname of Hokkien origin and Dutch-based, West Java romanization. Literally "yellow", or "golden yellow", its Central Java romanization is Oei, while its pinyin version is Huang. Pieter Gerardus Van Overstraten
Pieter Gerardus van Overstraten (19 February 1755, in Bergen op Zoom – 22 August 1801, in Batavia) was Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1796 until 1801. He was the last Governor-General of the Dutch East India Company, which was dissolved, bankrupt in 1799, but he remained in post as the Dutch state took over ruling its territories in the Indies. In that sense, he was also the first state appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Van Overstraten was appointed member-extraordinary of the ''Council of Justice (Raad van Justitie)'' in Batavia/Jakarta in 1780. He arrived in there in 1781. Java War (1741–1743)
The Java War of 1741 to 1743 was an armed struggle by a joint Chinese and Javanese army against the Dutch East India Company and pro-Dutch Javanese that took place in central and eastern Java. Ending in victory for the Dutch, the war led to the fall of the Sultanate of Mataram and, indirectly, the founding of both the Sunanate of Surakarta and the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. After years of growing anti-Chinese sentiment, Dutch forces massacred 10,000 ethnic Chinese in Batavia (now Jakarta) in October 1740. 1740 Batavia Massacre
The 1740 Batavia massacre ( nl, Chinezenmoord, lit=Murder of the Chinese; id, Geger Pacinan, lit=Chinatown tumult) was a massacre and pogrom in which European soldiers of the Dutch East India Company and Javanese collaborators killed ethnic Chinese residents of the port city of Batavia (present-day Jakarta) in the Dutch East Indies. The violence in the city lasted from 9 October 1740, until 22 October, with minor skirmishes outside the walls continuing late into November that year. Souw Beng Kong
Souw Beng Kong, 1st Kapitein der Chinezen (; 1580–1644), called Bencon in older Dutch sources, was an ally of the Dutch East India Company and the first Kapitan Cina, ''Kapitein der Chinezen'' of Batavia, Dutch East Indies, Batavia, capital of Dutch East Indies, colonial Indonesia.
