Odyssey House Texas, located in Houston, Texas is a private not-for-profit organization established in 1989 to provide treatment and education to youth and families whose lives have been devastated by drugs, alcohol, and Child abuse, abuse. At that time, local families who had lost their children to drugs, alcohol and death identified the need for an effective and affordable program. Judianne Densen-Gerber
Judianne Densen-Gerber (November 13, 1934 Manhattan, New York – May 11, 2003, Manhattan) was an American psychiatrist, lawyer, and educator. She “dedicated her professional life to fighting substance abuse, child abuse, battery of women and fought for the rights of child workers. She created the first non-methadone treatment programs with seven addicts in New York City. Her innovative model was created by academia and substance abusers who worked together. The first residential program served as the foundation for therapeutic xommunities around the world. Early life She was born to Gustave Gerber, a chemical engineer and Beatrice Densen, an heiress. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1956, Columbia Law School (JD (1959), and New York University (MD 1963). Until 1997, she was married to pathologist Michael Baden. Therapeutic Community
Therapeutic community is a participative, group-based approach to long-term mental illness, personality disorders and drug addiction. The approach was usually residential, with the clients and therapists living together, but increasingly residential units have been superseded by day units. It is based on milieu therapy principles, and includes group psychotherapy as well as practical activities. Therapeutic communities have gained some reputation for success in rehabilitation and patient satisfaction in Britain and abroad. They have faced serious allegations of patient abuse and use of patients for unfree labor. Cenikor provides treatment based on the therapeutic community approach. Methadone
Methadone, sold under the brand names Dolophine and Methadose among others, is a synthetic opioid agonist used for chronic pain and also for opioid dependence.
