''October 1970'' is an eight-part made-for-television series that played on Canadian television in October and November 2006. It is a dramatization of the actual events surrounding the October Crisis in the Canadian province of Quebec, when members of the militant separatist group Front de libération du Québec abducted British Trade Commissioner James Cross and then Pierre Laporte, the Vice-Premier and Minister of Labour of Quebec, the latter of whom they murdered. Wayne Grigsby
Wayne Grigsby (born 1947) is a Canadian screenwriter and producer, mainly for television. Career Grigsby, who comes from Calgary, Alberta, started primarily in arts and entertainment journalism. His goal had always been to write fiction. He had a script produced by Brian McKenna and Bernie Zukerman, which led to his becoming a screenwriter. Later, he formed Big Motion Pictures Inc. with David MacLeod. He also tried American TV with a failed pilot starring Kelly McGillis. James Cross
James Richard Cross (29 September 1921 – 6 January 2021) was an Irish-born British diplomat who served in India, Malaysia and Canada. While posted in Canada, Cross was kidnapped by members of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) during the October Crisis of October 1970. He was ultimately released almost two months later, and subsequently returned to the United Kingdom. Early life and career Cross was born in Nenagh in County Tipperary, Ireland, on 29 September 1921. His mother died during her labour with him. His older sibling had intellectual disabilities and was consequently institutionalised. Cross was raised on the family farm, which was a hundred acres in size, before moving in with relatives. He was nicknamed "Jasper" by his family and friends. Cross studied economics and political science at Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated with a first class honours degree in 1944. Albert Lisacek
Albert Lisacek (July 13, 1933 – November 20, 2012), also known as "Kojak", was a Montreal policeman involved in a number of high-profile cases. He was considered by some to be Canada's toughest cop. The son of Czechoslovakian immigrants Mary and Joseph Lisacek, he was born in Montreal near " The Main". After being chased by group of bullies at the age of fifteen, he decided on a career in policing. He first worked as a private detective and joined the Sûreté du Québec in 1956. In 1963, Lisacek became a member of the holdup squad. He was known for bringing his Thompson submachine gun with him while breaking down doors during raids. Derek Moran
D-Side were an Irish boy band established in 2001 by twins Rory and Eoghan MacSweeney, and signed to Edel Records. Edel brought in Kim Glover to manage the band after her success with New Kids on the Block, Ant & Dec (as PJ & Duncan), B*Witched and Let Loose. Glover secured their entry into Japan getting them a recording contract with Avex and worked with them until the end of 2004. They had some success in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Europe, winning 'Best New Band Award' at the ''Smash Hits Tour'' in 2002. Paul Rose (Quebec)
Paul Rose (October 16, 1943 – March 14, 2013) was a Québécois nationalist, a lecturer at Université du Québec à Montréal, convicted murderer and terrorist known for his role in the October Crisis. He was convicted of the kidnapping and murder by strangulation of Quebec Deputy Premier Pierre Laporte in 1970. A Quebec government commission later determined in 1980 that Rose was not present when Laporte was killed, despite a recorded confession. He was the leader of the Chenier cell of the ''Front de libération du Québec'' (FLQ), an armed group which was fighting what they considered the oppression of French Quebecers. On October 10, 1970, the cell kidnapped Quebec Deputy Premier Pierre Laporte. Laporte's strangled body was found in the trunk of a car on October 17. Bernard Lortie (born c. 1951) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada was a member of the Chenier Cell of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) who were responsible for a decade of bombings and armed robberies in the province of Quebec. Louise Lanctôt (born March 24, 1947) is a Canadian convicted kidnapper and writer. Born Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Lanctôt is a political activist for the cause of Quebec independence from Canada. Louise Lanctôt was an active member of the Rassemblement pour l'indépendance nationale political party that later merged with the Parti Québécois. Jacques Lanctôt
Jacques Lanctôt is a Canadian writer, publisher, terrorist, and restaurateur. He was a member of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) and was convicted on terrorism charges for his role in the kidnapping of British diplomat James Cross in October 1970. Lanctôt is the son of Gérard Lanctôt, a former head of the Parti de l'Unité nationale du Canada, a fascist party promoting Canadian nationalism. After Cross was released, Lanctôt and the other kidnappers were allowed to leave Canada. Lanctôt later returned to Canada in 1979, and served two years in prison. Following his release he set up a publishing house.
