Octavio Medellín
Octavio Medellín (1907–1999) was a Mexican-American sculptor and artist, most commonly known for his Mexican-influenced artwork in Texas. Medellín believed that “sincere art must be elemental and close to the earth,” and he strove to create art influenced by “the common people and everyday life,” not “politics” or “sophisticated ideas.” Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Medellín's work consisted of various paintings and sculptures that are now in an exhibition and digital library in Southern Methodist University'Bywaters Special Collections Early life Born of the son of an Otomi Indian mine worker in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in 1907, Medellín's native country was turning violent and riots were erupting more frequently than before. Mexican Art
Various types of visual arts developed in the geographical area now known as Mexico. The development of these arts roughly follows the history of Mexico, divided into the prehispanic Mesoamerican era, the New Spain, colonial period, with the period after Mexican War of Independence, the development Mexican national identity through art in the nineteenth century, and the florescence of modern Mexican art after the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). Mexican Americans ( es, mexicano-estadounidenses, , or ) are Americans of full or partial Mexican heritage. In 2019, Mexican Americans comprised 11.3% of the US population and 61.5% of all Hispanic and Latino Americans.
