ObliqSound
ObliqSound is a record label in New York City. It was founded by Tobias Tanner, Michele Locatelli, and Ralf Schmid. They studied music together at the New School in Manhattan. Their intent with Obliqsound is to produce musicians with a background in jazz whose music crosses genres. The roster includes Gilfema, which consists of Lionel Loueke, a guitarist from Benin; Massimo Biolcati, a Swedish-Italian bassist, and drummer Ferenc Nemeth from Hungary. Other atypical acts are Maori singer Tama Waipara and Flügelschlag!, a group from Germany which uses three pianos. Gretchen Parlato
Gretchen Parlato (born February 11, 1976) is an American jazz singer. She has performed and recorded with musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Barron, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Miller and Lionel Loueke. Parlato's ''Flor'' (2021) received a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, hitting No. 1 upon release in iTunes Jazz and #3 Best of the Year Albums in Jazzwise Critics Poll '21. Grand Pianoramax
Grand Pianoramax is an experimental keyboard and drums bands conceived by Leo Tardin. The band consists of Tardin and Dominik Burkhalter and features guests, often including Mike Ladd and Black Cracker. Biography The 2005 self-titled debut album features Tardin with drummer Jojo Mayer (and two tracks with Ferenc Nemeth on drums). Grand Pianoramax's second album ''The Biggest Piano in Town'' employs the likes of drummers Deantoni Parks and Adam Deitch and expanded personnel to include guest vocals, raps and spoken word from Mike Ladd, Black Cracker, Invincible, and Spleen. Massimo Biolcati
Massimo Biolcati (born 1972) is a Swedish-Italian-American jazz bassist who is a member of Gilfema and the Lionel Loueke Trio. Biography He is a founding member of Gilfema, a trio with Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth and West African guitarist Lionel Loueke that recorded two albums for ObliqSound. The group also recorded three albums for Blue Note as the Lionel Loueke Trio, including Karibu with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. John Shannon (musician)
John Shannon is an American folk-rock singer-songwriter. Early life Shannon grew up in Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania. His adolescence was spent in Pittsburgh's underground music scene, where indie-rock house shows and jazz gigs influenced him as much as an American Indian survival school. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Musical career AllMusic compared him to Tim Buckley and Nick Drake, stating, "his complex folk- and jazz-flavored melodies and lyrical, acoustic guitar style, as well as his breathy vocal delivery, certainly sound heavily influenced by one or both." Gilfema
Gilfema is a jazz trio consisting of Lionel Loueke (guitar), Ferenc Nemeth (drums), and Massimo Biolcati (bass). The name of the group comes from the musicians' names: Gil (Lionel Gilles Loueke), fe (Ferenc), ma (Massimo). They met at Berklee College of Music, coming from different backgrounds: Loueke from West Africa, Nemeth from Hungary, and Biolcati, an Italian born in Sweden. The same members form the Lionel Loueke Trio, the difference being that the Lionel Loueke Trio plays original music written by Loueke while Gilfema offers compositions by all three musicians. After 20 years of playing together, the band is coming out with a fresh new recording in April 2020 under the collaborative moniker Gilfema again. Tobias Preisig (born September 18, 1981 in Zurich) is a Swiss violinist and composer. His style can be described as alternative jazz or experimental improvised jazz. Andy Milne
Andy Milne (born January 30, 1969) is a Canadian jazz pianist, who records and performs both as a solo artist and as the leader of the ensemble Dapp Theory. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and raised in Kincardine and Toronto. One of ten siblings, he studied music at York University, where he was a student of Oscar Peterson. In 1990 Milne graduated and received a grant from the Canada Council to study at the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts. He met saxophonist Steve Coleman and later joined Coleman's band, Five Elements. In 1998, Milne formed the band Cosmic Dapp Theory. He has toured and recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Grégoire Maret, Sean Rickman, and Ralph Alessi. Pietro Tonolo
Pietro Tonolo (born 30 May 1959) is an Italian jazz saxophone player and composer. Biography He was born in Mirano, Italy. Pietro Tonolo gave up a career as a classical violinist to become a jazz sax player. Around that time, he moved to Milan, where he played with some of Italy’s best jazz musicians, including Franco D'Andrea, Luigi Bonafede, Larry Nocella, Massimo Urbani, Rita Marcotulli and Enrico Rava. In 1982, Tonolo joined the Gil Evans Orchestra, playing with notable musicians as Steve Lacy, Lew Soloff and Ray Anderson. He later went on to perform in jazz clubs and on radio and television around Europe and the United States, both as a sideman and as a leader with his own band. Somi (American Singer)
Laura Kabasomi Kakoma (born on June 6, 1981), known by her stage name Somi, is a Grammy-nominated American-born singer, songwriter, playwright, and actor of Rwandan and Ugandan descent. Somi is the first African woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award in a Jazz category. Lionel Loueke
Lionel Loueke (born 27 April 1973) is a guitarist and vocalist born in Benin. He moved to Ivory Coast in 1990 to study at the National Institute of Art. Biography Loueke grew up in what he has described as a family of poor intellectuals in the West African country of Benin. He began playing percussion instruments around the age of 9 but was influenced by an older brother who played guitar, which he began playing himself when he was seventeen. He listened to guitarists George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Wes Montgomery. It took Loueke a year to earn the $50 he needed to buy his first guitar. When he lacked money to buy new strings, which had to be bought across the border in Nigeria, he soaked the strings in vinegar to keep them clean. When the strings broke, he replaced them with bicycle brake cables, which damaged the neck of the guitar and compelled him to find a carpenter to fix it. Alon Yavnai
Alon Yavnai ( he, אלון יבנאי; born 1969) is an Israel-born jazz pianist. Biography Born in Israel, Yavnai began playing piano at the age of four. He has accompanied singers since the age of thirteen. He graduated from the Thelma Yellin High School for Arts, Givatayim Conservatory, both in Israel, and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusett. He won first place in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. He taught at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Yavnai leads a trio and has worked in a duo with Paquito D'Rivera and in a trio with Mark Summer. Ablaye Cissoko
Ablaye Cissoko is a Senegalese musician, singer and composer, who plays the kora. Career As a solo musician, he has played live shows in several countries, including Portugal, France, Belgium, Senegal, Mali, Canada, Germany, Norway and Russia. He has collaborated extensively with trumpeter Volker Goetze and they have released three albums as a duo: ''Sira'' in 2008, ''Amanké Dionti'' in 2012 and ''Djaliya'' in 2014.
