Obits was an American Rock music, rock band formed in 2006 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. The band members are veterans of other independent rock bands: Guitarist/singing, vocalist Rick Froberg was previously a member of Pitchfork (band), Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, and guitarist Sohrab Habibion was a member of Edsel (band), Edsel. The band has released five single (music), singles and three albums, ''I Blame You'' (2009), ''Moody, Standard and Poor'' (2011) and ''Bed and Bugs'' (2013). History Obits formed after singing, singer/guitarist Rick Froberg returned to New York in 2005 following the breakup of the Hot Snakes. In 2006 he began writing new material and rehearsing with drummer Scott Gursky of Shortstack and guitarist Sohrab Habibion, formerly of Edsel (band), Edsel. Moody, Standard And Poor
''Moody, Standard and Poor'' is the second album by the New York City-based rock music, rock band Obits, released March 29, 2011 through Sub Pop. Recording and composition ''Moody, Standard and Poor'' was recorded at Saltlands Studio in Brooklyn with recording engineer Geoff Sanoff and record producer Eli Janney (musician), Eli Janney. The band went through 40 different recordings from their rehearsals when selecting songs to work on for the album. According to guitarist and singer Sohrab Habibion, the songs are "shorter and more concise" than on the band's 2009 debut album ''I Blame You'': "We didn't intend to do that, but that's what we saw happening. It came down to 'How quickly can we get to the point, get in then get out of the song?' The sound of the record is a little more open. It sounds like you're in the room with the band live, which I think is a really nice sound." ''I Blame You'' is the debut album by the New York City-based rock band Obits, released on March 24, 2009 by Sub Pop. Singer/guitarist Rick Froberg, who is also a visual artist, provided the album's artwork. When interviewed about the meaning of the artwork, he commented: "If I get something I like, there's some meaning to it, and I can detect the meaning, I have ideas about what the subject matter might be, but I think it's best if I don't say. Hot Snakes
Hot Snakes are an American post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1999 in San Diego, California. Reis and Froberg had previously performed together in Pitchfork (band), Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu, after which Reis had found international success with Rocket from the Crypt. Hot Snakes disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2011. Although they share musical similarities with members' previous outfits, Hot Snakes have a sound that is much more primal than that of Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu or even Rocket from the Crypt. Reis and Froberg were also heavily influenced by bands such as The Wipers, Suicide (band), Suicide, and Michael Yonkers Band, and these influences gave Hot Snakes a distinctive sound that has been described by one critic as "hardcore garage punk." Rick Froberg
Eric "Rick" Froberg (born January 1968, also known by the pseudonyms Rick Fork and Rick Farr) is an American musician and visual artist. He was born in Los Angeles, lived in Encinitas, California, and currently resides in Brooklyn. In his musical career he has been the singing, singer and guitarist for the San Diego-area bands Pitchfork (band), Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, performing alongside fellow San Diego musician John Reis. Froberg has also played with the Last of the Juanitas, Thingy (band), Thingy and Obits. In his career as a Visual arts, visual artist and illustrator he has created album art, promotional artwork, and merchandise designs for all of his bands as well as for Rocket from the Crypt and Reis' Swami Records label. Drive Like Jehu
Drive Like Jehu was an American post-hardcore band from San Diego active from 1990 to 1995. It was formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rick Froberg and lead guitarist John Reis, ex-members of Pitchfork, along with bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino, both from Night Soil Man, after their two bands disbanded in 1990. Drive Like Jehu's music was characterized by passionate singing, unusual song structure, indirect melodic themes, intricate guitar playing, and calculated use of tension, resulting in a distinctive sound amongst other post-hardcore acts and helped to catalyze the evolution of hardcore punk into emo. After releasing their eponymous debut in 1991 through local record labels Cargo Music and Headhunter Records, Drive Like Jehu signed to major label Interscope Records along with Reis' other band Rocket from the Crypt. Pitchfork (band)
Pitchfork was an American post-hardcore band formed in 1986 in San Diego, California and disbanded in 1990. They are most well known as the first "real" band (after high school effort Conservative Itch/Coitus Interruptus) of guitarist John Reis, who would later gain fame as the frontman in Rocket from the Crypt, and as the first collaboration between Reis and singer Rick Froberg (the two would later form Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes). As an aspiring visual artist and illustrator, Froberg provided most of the band's artwork while Reis developed his studio skills by acting as producer on their records. Edsel was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. who formed in 1988. They released four albums on a yearly basis from 1992 to 1995, which included the ''Techniques of Speed Hypnosis'' album on the major label Relativity Records in 1995. They went on a hiatus in 1997, followed by brief reformations from 2000 to 2001 and 2012 to 2013. Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event.
