Oberlin USD 294 is a public unified school district headquartered in Oberlin, Kansas, United States. It includes the communities of Oberlin, Norcatur, Dresden (north of highway 383), Jennings (north of highway 383), Clayton (west of County Rd W-15 and north of highway 383), Cedar Bluffs, Traer, Kanona, Lyle, Reager, and nearby rural areas. Schools The school district operates the following schools: * Decatur Community Junior-Senior High School * Oberlin Elementary School History In 2006, ''Prairie Heights USD 295'' underwent a dissolution. Hoxie USD 412 took a majority of the students, the rest merged into Oberlin USD 294. In 2007 the school board considered instituting all-day kindergarten. In 2007 the school board selected Pat Cullen as the superintendent; at the time Cullen was the superintendent of the Brady Public School District. Oberlin, Kansas
Oberlin is a city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Kansas, Decatur County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 1,644. History Oberlin was platted in 1878. It was named after Oberlin, Ohio. Its first post office was established in April, 1878, and the city was incorporated in 1885. On September 30, 1878, Northern Cheyenne, fleeing from Indian Territory to their homes in the north during the Northern Cheyenne Exodus, attacked homesteaders near Oberlin, then a tiny hamlet. The raid's victims are commemorated in the "Last Indian Raid in Kansas" room of the Decatur County Museum, and by a monument in the town cemetery. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. The Athletic Association started as a small voluntary group of fewer than 50 schools and grew to more than 500 schools by the 1920s. Out of necessity, the member schools adopted eligibility and participation rules and established authority for a Board of Control to assess penalties against schools for violations.
