Obelix (video Game)
''Obelix'' is a 1983 video game developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600. It is centred around the characters Asterix and Obelix created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Gameplay The player controls Asterix whilst Obelix marches back and forth at the top of the screen carrying a menhir on his back. The player must temporarily stun Roman legionaries and centurions so that Obelix can throw a menhir at them to kill them. If the menhir misses, the stunned Roman may wake up, in which case the player can either attempt to escape to a lower level in the game or drink a magic potion to escape through the enemy soldiers. Development The game was released shortly after a similar game called Asterix, and was developed on the same licence. Suki Lee
Suki Lee is an American video game designer and computer programmer. She was one of the few female developers at Atari, Inc. in the early 1980s where she wrote the educational game ''Math Gran Prix'' for the Atari 2600 (1982) and '' Obelix'' (1983) for the same system. Afterward she worked as a project manager at Apple Computer. Education Lee received her bachelor's degree at San Jose State University with a major in general engineering. Career Lee was hired by Atari after college in August 1981. She was there until 1984, when she started working for Cadtrak Corporation developing software user interfaces for petroleum plant layout. She also worked for Apple from 1986 to 1997, then later went to work at Palm, eCircle and WebTV until 1997. In late 2002, she resigned and continued working at Apple. Menhir
A menhir (from Brittonic languages: ''maen'' or ''men'', "stone" and ''hir'' or ''hîr'', "long"), standing stone, orthostat, or lith is a large human-made upright stone, typically dating from the European middle Bronze Age. Shoot 'em Ups
Shoot 'em ups (also known as shmups or STGs ) are a sub-genre of action games. There is no consensus as to which design elements compose a shoot 'em up; some restrict the definition to games featuring spacecraft and certain types of character movement, while others allow a broader definition including characters on foot and a variety of perspectives. Math Gran Prix
''Math Gran Prix'' (released as ''Maths Grand Prix'' in Europe) is an educational video game written for the Atari 2600 by Suki Lee and published by Atari, Inc. in 1982. Gameplay The player must advance a car through a Grand Prix race by answering mathematics questions, with 9 variations of play. Random bonuses may pop up during play. Both two- and single-player gaming against the computer is possible, with the computer's calculation speed slowed artificially compared to its normal speed of calculation in single-player mode. Questions included addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The game is aimed at 7- to 10-year-old children. Development The game was programmed by Suki Lee. Lee went on to work on ''Obelix'', also for the Atari 2600. The cover art for the game was drawn by Warren Chang. Asterix (1983 Game)
''Taz'' is a video game developed and released by Atari, Inc. in 1983 for the Atari 2600. It features the Looney Tunes character the Tasmanian Devil in a food frenzy. Within the game, Taz only appears as a tornado. The same game was later released as ''Asterix'', with the character Asterix instead of Taz. Gameplay The player guides Taz between the stage lines in order to eat hamburgers and avoid the dynamites. The game does not use any buttons and the difficulty increases by increasing the speed of the objects on screen. Albert Uderzo
Alberto Aleandro Uderzo (; ; 25 April 1927 – 24 March 2020), better known as Albert Uderzo, was a French comic book artist and scriptwriter. He is best known as the co-creator and illustrator of the ''Astérix'' series in collaboration with René Goscinny. He also drew other comics such as '' Oumpah-pah'', again with Goscinny. Uderzo retired in September 2011. Early life Uderzo was born in Fismes in the Marne department of France on 25 April 1927 as the fourth child of Italian immigrants Silvio Uderzo (1888–1985) and his wife Iria Uderzo (born Crestini, 1897–1997). His parents had met in 1915 in La Spezia, where Silvio Uderzo was recovering after he had been wounded in his service for the Royal Italian Army during World War I. Atari, Inc. was an American video game developer and home computer company founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. René Goscinny
René Goscinny (, ; 14 August 1926 – 5 November 1977) was a French comic editor and writer, who created the ''Astérix'' comic book series with illustrator Albert Uderzo. Raised largely in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he attended French schools, he lived for a time in the United States. There he met Belgian cartoonist Morris. After his return to France, they collaborated for more than 20 years on the comic series ''Lucky Luke'' (in what was considered the series' golden age). He wrote ''Iznogoud'' with Jean Tabary. Goscinny also wrote a series of children's books known as ''Le Petit Nicolas'' (''Little Nicolas'') illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé. Obelix
Obelix (; french: Obélix) is a cartoon character in the French comic book series ''Asterix''. He works as a menhir sculptor and deliveryman, and is Asterix's best friend. Obelix is noted for his obesity, the menhirs he carries around on his back and his superhuman strength. He fell into a cauldron of the Gauls' magic potion when he was a baby, causing him to be the only Gaul in Asterix's village who is in a permanent state of superhuman strength. Because of this already enormous strength, Obelix is not allowed to drink the magic potion ever again, a ban he regards as being tremendously unfair.
