Obel Award
The OBEL AWARD is a global award presented annually to honour "recent and outstanding architectural contributions to human development all over the world." The prize sum is €100,000, making the Obel Award one of the world's largest architecture prizes in terms of prize money. The winner also receives an artwork trophy designed by Tomás Saraceno. The award was founded by Danish businessman Henrik Frode Obel (1942-2014) and sponsored by the Henrik Frode Obel Foundation, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Besides the annual award ceremony, The Obel Award produces books and publications and presents exhibitions and lectures on themes within architecture. Tomás Saraceno
Tomás Saraceno (San Miguel de Tucumán, 1973) is an Argentine contemporary artist whose projects, consisting of floating sculptures, international collaborations, and interactive installations, propose and dialogue with forms of inhabiting and sensing the environment that have been suppressed in the Capitalocene era. For more than two decades, Saraceno has activated projects aimed towards an ethical collaboration with the atmosphere, including the sculpture series Cloud Cities (2002–) and Museo Aero Solar (2007–), a community-organised initiative that transforms waste plastic bags into flying, aerosolar sculptures. These projects later grew into the Aerocene Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to community building, scientific research and artistic experiences. Kjetil Trædal Thorsen
Kjetil Trædal Thorsen is a Norwegian architect. In 1987, he co-founded the architecture firm Snøhetta. History Kjetil Trædal Thorsen was born 14 June 1958 on the Norwegian coastal island of Karmøy. After several years in Germany and England, he studied architecture in Graz, Austria. He had practiced at the office of Espen Tharaldsen (Arbeidsgruppen Hus) in Bergen (1982–1983), Ralph Erskine in Stockholm (1983–1984) and David Sandved in Haugesund (1985). Designs Thorsen led several award winning design competitions for public buildings around the world. He led the Snøhetta teams designing the museum built for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, the 2007 Serpentine Gallery temporary Pavilion in London designed with Olafur Eliasson, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina library in Alexandria, Egypt, and the new Oslo Opera House in Oslo, Norway. 21st-century Awards
The 1st century was the century spanning AD 1 ( I) through AD 100 ( C) according to the Julian calendar. Het Nieuwe Instituut
Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI, English: The New Institute) is a cultural centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It focuses on architecture, design, and digital culture. HNI is in a building designed by Jo Coenen at Museumpark 25 in the centre of Rotterdam, adjacent to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The building contains a shop, exhibition space, study centre, and archive, as well as the Sonneveld House (a prime example of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid architecture), a pond, and a small park. Xu Tiantian
Xu Tiantian () is a Chinese architect who is the founding principal architect of DnA Design and Architecture. She has engaged extensively in the rural revitalizing process in China. She has received numerous awards, such as the WA China Architecture Award in 2006 and 2008, the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architect in 2019, and the 14th International Prize for Sustainable Architecture Gold Medal; in 2020, she was appointed an Honorary Fellow of American Institute of Architects. Martha Schwartz
Martha Schwartz (born November 21, 1950) is an American landscape architect and educator. Schwartz is the founding principal of Martha Schwartz Partners, an architecture firm based in London, New York City, and Shanghai. She is also Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Career A native of Philadelphia, Schwartz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan in 1973. Jun'ya Ishigami
(born 1974 in Kanagawa prefecture) is a Japanese architect. He acquired his master's degree in architecture and planning at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2000. Ishigami worked with Kazuyo Sejima from 2000 to 2004 at SANAA, before establishing his own firm in 2004: junya.ishigami+associates. Ishigami showed solo in the Japanese pavilion at the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008; and was the youngest ever recipient of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology KAIT Workshop in 2009. In 2010 he won the Golden Lion for Best Project at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale, and became an associate professor at Tohoku University in Japan.
