OTI Festival 1972
The OTI Festival 1972 was the very first edition of the annual OTI Festival and was held in Madrid, Spain. Organised by the Organización de Televisión Iberoamericana (OTI) and host broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE), the contest was held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos auditorium on Saturday 25 November 1972 and was hosted by Rosa María Mateo and Raúl Matas. 14 countries were expected to debut in the festival, but Mexico was disqualified because their entry was considered non suitable for political reasons. Of the remaining 13 performers who took the stage, the winner was the Brazilian entrants Claudia Regina and Tobías with their song "Dialogo" (Dialogue), which was performed in Portuguese. Palacio De Congresos (Madrid)
The Palacio de Congresos de Madrid, also known as Palacio de Congresos or Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones, is a convention centre in Madrid, Spain. Located in the Paseo de la Castellana, it is unused since 2012. The building's façade prominently displays a ceramic mosaic reproducing a work by Joan Miró. Víctor Heredia (born 24 January 1947, in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine singer songwriter. Argentina In The OTI Festival
Argentina was one of the founding members of the OTI Festival and debuted in the event in 1972 when the first contest was held in Madrid. Canal 7 and Canal 13 Argentina were the two OTI member broadcasters that organised the Argentine participation in the event. Since their debut, this country participated regularly in the festival (except for 1974) till 2000, when the last edition took place. All the Argentine representatives in the show were selected internally. History Argentina was one of the most iconic and successful countries in the history of the OTI Festival. Uruguay In The OTI Festival
Uruguay and its OTI member station Teledoce, was one of the founders and main launchers of the OTI Festival. The country debuted in the contest in the first show in Madrid in 1972. Since then, the Uruguayan broadcaster took part every year until the last show which was held in Acapulco in 2000. Peru In The OTI Festival
Peru and its two OTI member stations, Panamericana TV and América Televisión, began their participation in the OTI Festival in 1972, in Madrid with Betty Missiego, who would represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest seven years later. Although the Peruvian debut in the Latin American song contest was apparently well received, her song "Recuerdos de un adiós" (Memories of a goodbye) didn't convince the juries and ended third to last. Colombia In The OTI Festival
Colombia debuted in the OTI Festival in the first edition of the show which was held in Madrid. This country took part in the festival since 1972 to 1998 but in the 27th edition of the festival in 2000, the Colombian broadcasters decided to withdraw from the event due to the bad results from 1992 on. History RCN and Caracol Television were the Colombian broadcasters that organised the Colombian entries in the OTI festival. All the entrants were internally selected except from 1992 when a national final was held. During the Colombian history in this festival, the country got three third places, one of them in 1975 with Leonor Gonzalez Mina and in 1973 with Jaime Mora. Spain and its OTI member station RTVE (Spanish Radio and Television) was one of the founding members of the OTI Festival and debuted in the event in 1972 in Madrid, being the host broadcaster of the first show. The Spanish participation in the song contest was almost uninterrupted, in fact, RTVE only withdrew from the contest in the edition of 1986, which was held in Santiago, as a protest against the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.
