OP-TEC
The National Center for Optics and Photonics Education, known as OP-TEC for short, was a joint effort by educational institutions and other groups to develop curriculum materials for photonics. Headquartered in Waco, Texas, it was funded by the National Science Foundation. OP-TEC held workshops at various institutions around the United States to promote the use of optics and photonics in secondary and post-secondary curricula. Photonics is a branch of optics that involves the application of generation, detection, and manipulation of light in form of photons through emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification, and sensing. Though covering all light's technical applications over the whole spectrum, most photonic applications are in the range of visible and near-infrared light. The term photonics developed as an outgrowth of the first practical semiconductor light emitters invented in the early 1960s and optical fibers developed in the 1970s. Waco ( ) is the county seat of McLennan County, Texas, United States. It is situated along the Brazos River and I-35, halfway between Dallas and Austin. The city had a 2020 population of 138,486, making it the 22nd-most populous city in the state. The 2021 U.S. Census population estimate for the city was 139,594. The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a public research university whose main campus is in unincorporated Orange County, Florida. With 70,406 students as of the Fall 2021 semester, UCF has the second-largest student body of any public university in the United States.
