OMIKE
OMIKE, the Hungarian Jewish Educational Association () was a Jewish cultural association that existed from 1910 to 1944. History Beginning OMIKE was founded in 1910 by Budapest chief rabbi, Simon Hevesi, with the purpose to maintain the traditional values of Judaism for people living in secular society. The association set up several cultural and welfare institution, e.g. kitchen for out of town students, library lodging for Jewish industry and trade students, summer camps. Lectures were organized. After the Anti-Jewish Laws from 1938 onwards actors, singers, artists, and writers who could not work under the anti-Semitic restrictions received assistance and protection. Artist Action From 1938 limits were placed on Jewish actors performing in theatres and cinema. The Budapest Opera suggested the possibility of acting in the Goldmark Hall of the Jewish Community. Ilka Gedő
Ilka Gedő (May 26, 1921June 19, 1985) was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist. Her work survives decades of persecution and repression, first by the semi-fascist regime of the 1930s and 1940s and then, after a brief interval of relative freedom between 1945 and 1949, by the communist regime of the 1950s to 1989. In the first stage of her career, which came to an end in 1949, she created a huge number of drawings that can be divided into various series. From 1964 on, she resumed her artistic activities creating oil paintings. "Ilka Gedő is one of the solitary masters of Hungarian art. She is bound to neither the avant-garde nor traditional trends. Vera Rózsa
Vera Rózsa OBE (or Vera Rózsa-Nordell, ; 16 May 1917 – 15 October 2010) was a Hungarian singer, voice teacher, and vocal consultant. She lived in the United Kingdom from 1954. Education She started her music education at the age of five. Her parents were teachers and having no baby-sitter at home, they simply took her along to school. Her parents, especially her father, were very musical (he played the violin). Vera Rózsa started to learn music also at an early age, her first instructor being her own father. Dezső Ernster
Dezső Ernster (23 November 1898 – 15 February 1981) was a Hungarian opera singer who sang leading bass roles with the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1946 to 1963. In 1929, he created the role of Baron d'Houdoux in Hindemith's ''Neues vom Tage''. Biography Dezső Ernster was born in Pécs, the son of a cantor, and studied in Budapest and Vienna. He made his debut in Plauen in eastern Germany, as Hermann in ''Tannhäuser'' in the 1924–1925 season. History Of The Jews In Hungary
The history of the Jews in Hungary dates back to at least the Kingdom of Hungary, with some records even predating the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE by over 600 years. Written sources prove that Jewish communities lived in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and it is even assumed that several sections of the heterogeneous Hungarian tribes practiced Judaism. Jewish officials served the king during the early 13th century reign of Andrew II. From the second part of the 13th century, the general religious tolerance decreased and Hungary's policies became similar to the treatment of the Jewish population in Western Europe. The Jews of Hungary were fairly well integrated into Hungarian society by the time of the First World War. By the early 20th century, the community had grown to constitute 5% of Hungary's total population and 23% of the population of the capital, Budapest. Károly Pap
Károly Pap (24 September 1897 – 1945) was a Hungarian writer. Biography He was the third child of , who was the Chief Rabbi of the Neolog community in Sopron. His mother was from a wealthy family. He volunteered to fight in World War I and served as an officer on the Italian Front. After the war, he fought on behalf of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. Following the Republic's demise, this resulted in his being jailed from 1920 to 1921. In 1922, he moved to Vienna, Austria, where he worked for a coffin maker and spent time with a touring theater company. His first novel was published in 1923. Three years later, after returning to Hungary, he made the acquaintance of and the founding editor of ''Nyugat'', Ernő Osvát, who encouraged him to continue writing and promoted his works.
