Old Mission Beach Athletic Club Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based in San Diego, California. OMBAC RFC is directly affiliated with the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. The rugby team plays at The Little Q Rugby Field, adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium (hence the name). History The Old Mission Beach rugby club was established in 1966 under the wing of Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) which was founded in 1954. Many past students of the San Diego State University rugby team joined, and the OMBAC rugby club entered first division competition two years later in 1968. The club has won 6 national Rugby Sevens titles and 8 national Rugby Fifteens titles. Venue In 1991 OMBAC raised funds to build a new clubhouse joining only a handful of teams in the United States to have such a facility. Currently OMBAC plays its home matches at the "Little Q". Rugby Super League (US)
The USA Rugby Super League, usually known as the Super League, is a defunct national rugby union competition which ran from 1997 to 2012, contested by nine clubs in the United States by its last year. In the 2013 season, it was replaced by the USA Rugby Elite Cup. The Super League competition was sanctioned by USA Rugby, the sport's national governing body, and was the premier level of rugby union in the country until it was reformatted into the Elite Cup. Created by the management of 14 of the best rugby organizations in the United States, the league's goal was to create a high level, national rugby competition in the country. The competition was contested annually starting in 2007, with the largest number of clubs to have competed in the league being 18, in 2007 and 2008. San Diego State Aztecs Rugby
San Diego State Aztecs rugby club is the rugby union club of San Diego State University in San Diego, California. It fields both men's and women's teams, the men compete in Division 1-A in the California conference and the women play in the Pacific Desert conference of Division II. The Aztec men's team won the US National Collegiate Rugby Championship in 1987. Teams Men's team Since the inception of the club in 1958, men's rugby has been both a popular and successful sport on campus at SDSU, so much so that Aztec alumni went on to set-up the rugby team of Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) in 1966 and also to found San Diego Old Aztecs RFC in 1978. Christopher Lippert (known as Chris Lippert; born March 31, 1963) is an American retired rugby union player who played at prop for the United States national rugby union team and the Barbarian F.C. Early life and career Lippert was born in San Diego, California, U.S., on March 31, 1963. Lippert debuted for the United States national rugby union team on September 23, 1989. He made a total of 38 test appearances for the USA Eagles, including the 1991 Rugby World Cup, and captained the team in the 1996 Pan-American Championship. Lippert played 3 matches for the Barbarian F.C. He was an All-American and won a National Championship with San Diego State University in 1987. Daniel Joseph Lyle (born September 28, 1970) is an American former rugby union player who played for the United States national rugby union team 45 times from 1994 to 2003, serving as U.S. captain in 24 of those matches. Lyle played number eight. Early life Lyle was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Brian Gerard Vizard (born July 4, 1959) is an American former rugby union player who was captain of the U.S. national rugby team and made 22 appearances for the United States national team. Dan Payne (rugby Union)
Dan Payne (born September 12, 1972) is an American former rugby union player, coach, and college athletic director. He is chief executive officer for Rugby Americas, both North and South America. Payne was born in Victor, New York. He attended college at Clarion University where he was an All-America wrestler. Payne did not play rugby in his youth, but discovered rugby in 2001 while living in New York. Payne then moved to San Diego where he played for the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC). Payne's position was number eight. He played for the United States national rugby union team, and played for the U.S. at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
