OKra Records
OKra Records was a Columbus, Ohio-based independent record label established in the late 1980s. It was founded by Dan Dow, the former guitarist for the Gibson Bros. and the former owner of Used Kids Records, which he “co-founded” with Ron House (of Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments and Great Plains) in 1986. According to Cordelia's Dad drummer Peter Irvine, OKra was run almost entirely by Dow himself. The label stopped putting out records in 1993. Columbus () is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments
Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments was a band from Columbus, Ohio active from 1989 to 2000. History The band was formed in 1989 by Ron House, the former frontman of the band Great Plains. The band is named after Thomas Jefferson's slave quarters at Monticello. Soon after their formation, they released several 7"s in the Columbus area. They followed these up with their debut album, ''Bait and Switch'', which they recorded at a cost of $800, and which was released in 1995 on American Recordings. This album was followed by their second album, ''Straight to Video'', in 1997 on Anyway Records. Also in 1997, the band released a compilation album, ''You Lookin' for Treble'', which contained singles the band had released from 1990 to 1992, as well as songs from an EP released during that time. Great Plains (Ohio Band)
Great Plains was a band from Columbus, Ohio active during the 1980s. Its vocalist and songwriter, Ron House, went on to found the much more successful band Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments. History Great Plains was founded in 1981. Its first release was 1982's ''The Mark, Don & Mel'' EP, which contained eight tracks. In 1984, they released their full-length debut, ''Born in a Barn'', on Homestead Records. They released another full-length, ''Naked At The Buy Sell & Trade'', in 1986, followed by their third such album, ''Sum Things Up'', in 1987. In 1989, the band released a compilation album, ''Colorized!'', on the Demon Records offshoot Diabolo Records. In 2000, a compilation album of 50 of the band's songs from their entire career, entitled ''Length of Growth, 1981-1989'', was released on the Old 3C label. Cordelia's Dad
Cordelia's Dad is a band from Northampton, Massachusetts that combines folk and punk rock influences and was instrumental in the creation of the genre later to be dubbed " No Depression". The band formed in 1987 and was active until 1998, when the members relocated to different parts of the country. After releasing an album of older material in 2002 the band reunited in 2007 for their twentieth anniversary. Career Cordelia's Dad was founded in 1987 by Amherst College students Tim Eriksen (bass, vocals), Peter Irvine (drums), Tom King (guitar). Although all three had previous experiences with traditional American music their initial sound was closer to that of alternative rock bands like Dinosaur Jr. and accordingly they recorded their first, eponymous album at Fort Apache Studios in Boston. Ass Ponys was an indie rock band based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their sound combines rock and country into an off-kilter blend of Americana music. They have gone on national tours with bands such as Pavement, Throwing Muses, and Possum Dixon. Among other periodicals, they have been featured in ''Rolling Stone'', ''CMJ'', and ''The Cincinnati Post''. History The Ass Ponys was formed in 1988 from members of Ohio band the Libertines and Midwestern band Gomez. The group was active for 17 years, releasing six studio albums from 1988 to 2005. The Ass Ponys went on hiatus in 2005, after releasing the compilation album ''The Okra Years'' – four years after their last original material was released in ''Lohio''. The Fellow Travellers were an American band formed in 1990 by Jeb Loy Nichols, Martin Harrison of On-U Sound Records, and Nichols' wife, vocalist Loraine Morley.
