O'Dempseys
O'Dempsey's GAA is a Gaelic football club located in the northeast of County Laois, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1951, won the Laois Junior Football Championship title in that same year and followed up by winning the Laois Intermediate Football Championship title the following year. The club name refers to the Ó Díomasaigh (O'Dempsey) family, the ancient Gaelic rulers of the Clann Mhaolughra (Clanmaliere) region, incorporating Portnahinch and Upper Philipstown on both sides of the River Barrow. O'Dempsey's went on to win two Laois Senior Football Championship titles in 1963 and 1980. Locally well-known county players that have played for the club Include John Costello, Billy Walsh, John Paul Kehoe, Johnny Behan, Brian Nerney, Eddie Kelly, Jack Kenna, Mick Aherne, Leo Turley and Peter O'Leary. Leo Turley
Leo Turley (born 7 December 1966) is a former Gaelic footballer from County Laois. Playing career Leo played for the Laois senior football team from the late 1980s until the 1990s primarily as a forward. During that period he was widely regarded as one of the top players in the country in his position. In 1991, he played on the Laois team beaten by Meath GAA in the final of the Leinster Senior Football Championship. Peter O'Leary is a Gaelic football player from Laois in Ireland. In 2003 was part of the Laois team that won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship title for the first time since 1997. Jack Kenna
Jack Kenna (born 1932) was a Gaelic footballer from County Laois. He was born in Kilmullen. He played for many years on the Laois senior football team in the forwards and was widely regarded as one of the outstanding players in Ireland of the 1950s. He also played for his province Leinster, winning three Railway Cup medals in 1955, 1959 and 1961. Kenna began his football career with the Jamestown club. Killenard
Killenard () is a village in County Laois, Ireland. It lies in the historic barony of Portnahinch and within the administrative area of Laois County Council. As of the 2016 census, the village had a population of 671 people, up from 622 inhabitants as of the 2011 census. Formerly a small village, a number of housing developments were built in the area during the " Celtic Tiger" era. Johnny Behan
John Harris Behan (October 24, 1844 – June 7, 1912) was an American law enforcement officer and politician who served as Sheriff of Cochise County in the Arizona Territory, during the gunfight at the O.K. Corral and was known for his opposition to the Earps. Behan was sheriff of Yavapai County from 1871 to 1873. He was married and had two children, but his wife divorced him, accusing him of consorting with prostitutes. He was elected to the Seventh Arizona Legislative Assembly, representing Yavapai County. In 1881, Wyatt Earp served for about five months as undersheriff of the eastern half of Pima County. When Wyatt resigned, Behan was appointed to fill his place, which included the mining boomtown Tombstone. When Cochise County was formed in February 1881, Behan was appointed as its first sheriff. The Laois All-County Football League (ACFL) is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by Laois GAA clubs. There are seven divisions and teams are promoted and relegated according to their league standing each year. Prior to the inception of the All-County Football League, league competitions titled the Senior Football League, Intermediate Football League and Junior Football League were in place.
