The O'Day 30 is an American sailboat that was designed by C.R. Hunt & Associates as a cruiser and first built in 1977.Sherwood, Richard M.: ''A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition'', pages 214-215. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1994. The O'Day 30 design was developed into the O'Day 31 in 1985 with the addition of an extended stern. Production The design was built by O'Day Corp. in the United States. The company built 356 examples of the design between 1977 and 1984, when production ended. Design The O'Day 30 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with teak wood trim. Alberg 30
The Alberg 30 is a Canadian sailboat, that was designed by Carl Alberg and first built in 1962. The Alberg 30 incorporates design elements from the similar Alberg Odyssey 30 of two years earlier. Production The boat was built by Whitby Boat Works in Canada, who completed more than 700 examples between 1962 and 1987, but it is now out of production. Construction was changed during the production run. Early models have a laminated wood mast brace and no liner, with a masonite-cored deck that drains overboard via the toe rail. Later models feature an aluminum mast brace inside a molded fiberglass liner, balsa-cored decks that drain through cockpit scupper drain hoses. Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used for yacht racing in North America. It allows dissimilar classes of sailboats to be raced against each other. The aim is to cancel out the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each class of boats, so that results reflect crew skill rather than equipment superiority. PHRF is used mainly for larger sailboats (i.e., 7 meters and above). For dinghy racing, the Portsmouth yardstick handicapping system is more likely to be used. The handicap number assigned to a class of yachts is based on the yacht's speed relative to a theoretical yacht with a rating of 0. A yacht's handicap, or rating, is the number of seconds per mile traveled that the yacht in question should be behind the theoretical yacht. A traveller is a part of the rigging of a boat or ship that provides a moving attachment point for a rope, sail or yard to a fixed part of the vessel. It may take the form of anything from a simple ring on a metal bar or a spar to, especially in a modern yacht, a more complex "car" – a component with bearing-mounted wheels running on a shaped aluminium extrusion. There are three common examples of the use of a traveller. The sheet of a sail is attached to a traveller on the horse, allowing the sail's clew to be positioned to leeward on each tack, thereby giving a more aerodynamically efficient position of the sail. Boom Vang
A boom vang (US) or kicking strap (UK) (often shortened to "vang" or "kicker") is a line or piston system on a sailboat used to exert downward force on the boom and thus control the shape of the sail. The Collins English Dictionary defines it as "A rope or tackle extended from the boom of a fore-and-aft mainsail to a deck fitting of a vessel when running, in order to keep the boom from riding up". The vang typically runs from the base of the mast to the boom. A genoa sail is a type of large jib or staysail that extends past the mast and so overlaps the main sail when viewed from the side, sometimes eliminating it. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship.
