O'Dempseys GAA
O'Dempsey's GAA is a Gaelic football club located in the northeast of County Laois, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1951, won the Laois Junior Football Championship title in that same year and followed up by winning the Laois Intermediate Football Championship title the following year. The club name refers to the Ó Díomasaigh (O'Dempsey) family, the ancient Gaelic rulers of the Clann Mhaolughra (Clanmaliere) region, incorporating Portnahinch and Upper Philipstown on both sides of the River Barrow. O'Dempsey's went on to win two Laois Senior Football Championship titles in 1963 and 1980. Locally well-known county players that have played for the club Include John Costello, Billy Walsh, John Paul Kehoe, Johnny Behan, Brian Nerney, Eddie Kelly, Jack Kenna, Mick Aherne, Leo Turley and Peter O'Leary. ''The Nationalist'' is an Irish regional newspaper, published each Tuesday in Carlow. It has three comprehensive sections, containing news, sport and 'living' articles. History The first edition of ''The Nationalist and Leinster Times'' was published on Browne Street, Carlow in 1883. Peter O'Leary is a Gaelic football player from Laois in Ireland. In 2003 was part of the Laois team that won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship title for the first time since 1997. Johnny Behan
John Harris Behan (October 24, 1844 – June 7, 1912) was an American law enforcement officer and politician who served as Sheriff of Cochise County in the Arizona Territory, during the gunfight at the O.K. Corral and was known for his opposition to the Earps. Behan was sheriff of Yavapai County from 1871 to 1873. He was married and had two children, but his wife divorced him, accusing him of consorting with prostitutes. He was elected to the Seventh Arizona Legislative Assembly, representing Yavapai County. In 1881, Wyatt Earp served for about five months as undersheriff of the eastern half of Pima County. When Wyatt resigned, Behan was appointed to fill his place, which included the mining boomtown Tombstone. When Cochise County was formed in February 1881, Behan was appointed as its first sheriff. Laois All-County Football League
The Laois All-County Football League (ACFL) is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by Laois GAA clubs. There are seven divisions and teams are promoted and relegated according to their league standing each year. Prior to the inception of the All-County Football League, league competitions titled the Senior Football League, Intermediate Football League and Junior Football League were in place. These would have roughly equated to the current top three or four divisions in the ACFL. The Laois Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The Heath are the title holders (2022) defeating Arles–Kilcruise in the Final. Format The Intermediate Championship has a 'back door' and operates similarly to the Senior Championship (and Junior Championship C only) by going for a straight knockout but the 'back door' is in place for anyone losing out. Leo Turley
Leo Turley (born 7 December 1966) is a former Gaelic footballer from County Laois. Playing career Leo played for the Laois senior football team from the late 1980s until the 1990s primarily as a forward. During that period he was widely regarded as one of the top players in the country in his position. In 1991, he played on the Laois team beaten by Meath GAA in the final of the Leinster Senior Football Championship.
