Nurses Cottage
Nurses Cottage is a heritage-listed cottage at 5 Market Street, Berrima, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is also known as Rose Cottage. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History It was built as nurses' quarters 1890 for the occupants of the Magistrate's House. It has also been used as a baby health care centre and as a shop for gifts and collectibles. Description Nurses Cottage is a small single storey weatherboard cottage with a gabled roof continued as a skillion over the front verandah. The verandah features square timber posts and scalloped boarding to ends (probably later fabric). The main gables have small louvered vents with pointed heads. The windows to front elevation are 2 x 6 pane sashes. Significance The former Nurses Cottage is significant to the local community as part of the early housing stock of the town and as a site associated with the Magistrate's House adjacent. Berrima, New South Wales
Berrima () is a historic village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. The village, once a major town, is located on the Old Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra. It was previously known officially as the Town of Berrima. It is close to the three major towns of the Southern Highlands: Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale. Etymology The name ''Berrima'' is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning either "southward" or "black swan". History The area around Berrima was once occupied by the Dharawal Aborigines. The region and Wingecarribee River was first visited by Europeans during the late 1790s, including a 1798 expedition led by an ex-convict, John Wilson. However, John and Hamilton Hume rediscovered the area in 1814. The area was explored by Charles Throsby in 1818. Runs were taken up soon after, including by one by Charles Throsby. Wingecarribee Shire is the local government area of the Southern Highlands in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The Wingecarribee Shire is around southwest of the Sydney central business district and is part of regional Capital Country and to some extent can be considered part of the Southern Tablelands. Wingecarribee Shire covers an area of that is typically referred to as the ''Southern Highlands''. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans. As a result, the register contains over 20,000 statutory-listed items in either public or private ownership of historical, cultural, and architectural value. Magistrate's House
Magistrate's House is a heritage-listed residence at 5–7 Market Place, Berrima, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is also known as Carthona and Ballynahinch. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History It was built for merchant and auctioneer James Jerome Higgins and his wife Mary, with conflicting sources providing various construction dates ranging from the early 1830s to early 1840s. Higgins remained in the property until 1850. It was thereafter leased to police magistrates. Mary Stone used it as a school 1900, after which it became derelict until 1927. From 1927 it was owned by prominent local family the Browns for several decades, who undertook extensive renovations.
