''Now It's Overhead'' is the debut album by the band Now It's Overhead from Athens, Georgia. It was released on October 2, 2001. This was Saddle Creek Records' first full-length album by a band from outside of Nebraska. The band consisted of Andy LeMaster (vocals, instruments, recording), Orenda Fink (bass, keyboards, trumpet, vocals), Maria Taylor (keyboards, vocals), and Clay Leverett (drums, vocals). Andy LeMaster, former Sugar bassist David Barbe, and Glands bassist Andy Baker jointly own and operate Chase Park Transduction Recording Studio in Athens. Along with the ''Now It's Overhead'' recording, Chase Park has also made recordings by Japancakes, Azure Ray, Seaworthy, Amy Ray, and The Glands The Glands were an American indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, United States. Now It's Overhead
Now It's Overhead was an indie rock band fronted by singer/songwriter Andy LeMaster and based in Athens, Georgia. Their first album, a self-titled collection of songs LeMaster wrote over a period of two years in the late 1990s, quickly rose from a studio project to a full-time band with the assistance of drummer Clay Leverett, Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor of Azure Ray. They were the first band not hailing from Nebraska to be signed by Omaha-based Saddle Creek Records. In 2004 they released their sophomore, critically acclaimed album '' Fall Back Open'', which included a duet with Michael Stipe of R.E.M., a long-time supporter of the band. That year, the band also embarked on a US tour as support for R.E.M, who are also from Athens, Georgia. Now It's Overhead's third album ''Dark Light Daybreak'' was released on September 12, 2006. Sugar (American Band)
Sugar was an American alternative rock band active in the early 1990s. Formed in 1992, they were led by the singer and guitarist Bob Mould (ex-Hüsker Dü), alongside bassist David Barbe (ex-Mercyland) and drummer Malcolm Travis (ex- Human Sexual Response). Career After frontman Bob Mould departed from Hüsker Dü, he released two solo ventures, ''Workbook'' and '' Black Sheets of Rain''; neither album was well received and Mould was released from his contract with Virgin Records America in 1991 as a result. Shortly after, Mould recorded a demo tape of over thirty songs and formed Sugar with David Barbe and Malcolm Travis. The band was named in an Athens, GA Waffle House Restaurant when Mould spotted a sugar packet on the table where he and the other two band members were sitting. The Glands
The Glands were an American indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, United States. Their first CD, ''Double Thriller'', was self-released in 1996 and reissued on Bar/None Records in 1998. Their self-titled album was first released in 2000 on Capricorn Records and reissued on Velocette Records in August 2001. Overview The Glands' unique sounds recalled a variety of influences, including the Kinks, the Who, and The Rolling Stones. The song "Livin' Was Easy" was featured in the DVD ''Let America Laugh'' by comedian David Cross. The band reunited for a brief east coast tour in late 2011, playing several dates with Yo La Tengo. Ross Shapiro, singer, guitarist, and founding member of The Glands, died in March 2016 aged 53 of lung cancer. Amy Elizabeth Ray (born April 12, 1964) is an American alto singer-songwriter and member of the contemporary folk duo Indigo Girls. She also pursues a solo career and has released six albums under her own name, and founded a record company, Daemon Records. Biography Born in Decatur, Georgia, Amy Ray met Emily Saliers when they both attended the same elementary school. They began performing together and recorded a demo in 1981. Azure Ray
Azure Ray is an American dream pop duo, consisting of musicians Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 2001, they later moved to Omaha, Nebraska and became part of the Saddle Creek Records music scene, which also included Bright Eyes, The Faint, and Cursive. Azure Ray's music has often been featured in film and television, including '' Six Feet Under'', ''Grey's Anatomy'', and '' The Devil Wears Prada''. Japancakes
Japancakes is an American indie rock group, based in Athens, Georgia, United States. History Rhythm guitarist Eric Berg formed the band with the idea of putting ten musicians in a band without any rehearsal, and performing a D chord for 45 minutes (similar to Terry Riley's ''In C''). He continued performances with numerous instrumentalists before releasing their first recording ''If I Could See Dallas'' on Kindercore Records in 1999. The band settled into a consistent lineup on ''The Sleepy Strange,'' released in 2001, also on Kindercore. That lineup, which included pedal steel instrumentalist John Neff, drummer Brant Rackley, keyboardist Todd Kelly, bassist Nick Bielli, and cellist/keyboardist Heather MacIntosh (along with Eric Berg on guitar) also recorded 2002's ''Belmondo'' for California's Darla Records imprint. 2003 saw the departure of Todd Kelly, and 2004 saw the release of ''Waking Hours'' on the Athens label WARM Recordings. David Barbe
David Barbe (pronounced ˈbɑɹ.bi BAR-bee; born September 30, 1963) is an American musician and producer/engineer from Athens, Georgia and director of the Music Business Certificate Program at the University of Georgia. He is chief of Chase Park Transduction studio in Athens. Barbe is known for his work as a songwriter, singer, guitarist, and bass guitarist in Sugar, Mercyland, and Buzz Hungry, as well as solo performances. He has produced nearly every album by the popular country rock band Drive-By Truckers, and has worked as producer and engineer with Son Volt. He has an all-star solo band in Athens called the Quick Hooks. Maria Diane Taylor (born May 21, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter from Birmingham, Alabama. She is also a member of the duo Azure Ray with Orenda Fink. Taylor plays several instruments, including the guitar, drums, and piano and has collaborated or performed with such artists as Bright Eyes, Phoebe Bridgers, Moby, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Joshua Radin, and more. Biography Taylor started her musical career at the age of fifteen in the band Little Red Rocket with Orenda Fink which released two CDs on Geffen, ''Who Did You Pay'' (1997) and ''It's in the Sound'' (2000). Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Orenda Fink is an American singer, musician, and writer. Perhaps best known as half of the duo Azure Ray, Fink is also a member of Art in Manila, O+S, Closeness, and High Up, and has played with or appeared as a guest on records by Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst, Moby, The Faint, Pete Yorn, and others. She is married to Todd Fink (formerly Todd Baechle) of The Faint. Biography Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1975, Fink started her musical career at the age of fifteen in the band Little Red Rocket.
