Nottawa, Texas
Nottawa is a ghost town in northeast Wharton County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The former community was situated in a rice-growing area midway between East Bernard and Lissie at the junction of U.S. Route 90 Alternate (US 90A) and Farm to Market Road 1164 (FM 1164). There was a gas compressor station on the site in 2016. History The area was served by the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway since 1859, when the land was used as free range for cattle. Serious settlement did not begin until 1878 when Czechs moved into the area. Some English and Welsh were enticed by the New Philadelphia project, which settled what later became Lissie. After the first wave of settlement fizzled out, a second wave was begun by promoter John Linderholm of the South Texas Colonization Company who bought 60,000 acres locally. Lissie, Texas
Lissie is an unincorporated community in Wharton County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 70 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Despite the completion of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway through the region in 1859, it wasn't until 1878 that a sizable population of settlers began to inhabit the region by West Bernard Creek. A station was built next to the railroad, and a post office was established in 1878. As the neighborhood expanded, it acquired a Methodist church, a hotel, and several other businesses, earning the moniker New Philadelphia. Due to the nearly two million Welsh miners who lost their jobs during the severe depression that began in Great Britain in 1876, its residents moved away. Buffalo Bayou, Brazos And Colorado Railway
The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (B.B.B.C. or B.B.B. & C.), also called the Harrisburg Road or Harrisburg Railroad, was the first operating railroad in Texas. It completed its first segment of track between Harrisburg, Texas (now a neighborhood of Houston) and Stafford's Point, Texas in 1853. East Bernard is a city in Wharton County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,218 at the 2020 census. U.S. Highway 90 Alternate (US 90A) and Texas State Highway 60 (SH 60) intersect within the city limits. East Bernard has its own school district, two auto dealerships and a number of other businesses. The San Bernard River flows past the city's eastern side. History In 2000, East Bernard incorporated.
