Lissie, Texas
Lissie is an unincorporated community in Wharton County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 70 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Despite the completion of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway through the region in 1859, it wasn't until 1878 that a sizable population of settlers began to inhabit the region by West Bernard Creek. A station was built next to the railroad, and a post office was established in 1878. As the neighborhood expanded, it acquired a Methodist church, a hotel, and several other businesses, earning the moniker New Philadelphia. Due to the nearly two million Welsh miners who lost their jobs during the severe depression that began in Great Britain in 1876, its residents moved away. Paul Vandervoort (July 12, 1846 – July 29, 1902) was an American soldier of Belgian descent who served in the Union Army and as the 11th Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, 1882-1883. Early life and military career Vandervoort was born July 12, 1846, in Clinton County, Ohio, to William and Theresa (Harvey) Vandervoort. During the Civil War, he lied about his age and enlisted June 10, 1862, as a private in Company G, 68th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (a 3-month regiment). Chesterville is an unincorporated community in eastern Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located in a farming region northeast of Eagle Lake, at the junction of Farm to Market Road 1093 (FM 1093) and Farm to Market Road 2764 (FM 2764). A large grain storage facility is a significant landmark in the area. Geography The small community of Chesterville is situated in extreme eastern Colorado County.
