Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Though at the time the technology to synchronize sound with the film did not exist, music was seen as an essential part of the viewing experience. Crime Film
Crime films, in the broadest sense, is a film genre inspired by and analogous to the crime fiction literary genre. Films of this genre generally involve various aspects of crime and its detection. Stylistically, the genre may overlap and combine with many other genres, such as drama or gangster film, but also include comedy, and, in turn, is divided into many sub-genres, such as mystery, suspense or noir. Screenwriter and scholar Eric R. Williams identified crime film as one of eleven super-genres in his Screenwriters Taxonomy, claiming that all feature-length narrative films can be classified by these super-genres. The other ten super-genres are action, fantasy, horror, romance, science fiction, slice of life, sports, thriller, war and western. Walter West (director)
Walter Alabaster West (9 November 1885 – 3 July 1958) was an English people, English film director and Film producer, producer. He was a partner in the film production company Broadwest Films. Early life Walter West was born in Cookham, Berkshire on 11 September 1885. His early silent films, some of which are in the collection of the BFI National Archive, include ''The Merchant of Venice'' (1915). He owned extensive film studios, one of the largest being the glass studios at Walthamstow, London, purchased from Cunard Films. With George Broadbridge (later Lord Broadbridge), he formed the Broadwest Films Company. Films made by Broadwest were not only shown in the UK but exported internationally, including India, New Zealand, Scandinavia and the US. Julian Royce
Julian Royce (26 March 1866 – 10 May 1946), born William Leonard Gardener, was a British stage and, later, film actor. In 1889 he married an actress, Elizabeth Mary Day ("Nora Day"). The two toured together in 1891, by which time he had adopted the stage name Julian Royce. They appeared together in 1897 in ''The New Magdalen'', and in 1898 they appeared in ''Sporting Life'', by Seymour Hicks and Cecil Raleigh, at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, with Royce as the evil Malet de Carteret. Manora Thew
Manora Alice Thew (12 April 1891 – 12 April 1987) was an English actress. She was born in Negapatam, Madras Presidency, British India, the daughter of Alice Maude ''née'' Turner (1865–1925) and Cuthbert Harrison Thew (1859–1928). In 1911 she was a student at a boarding school in Frimley in Surrey. In 1915 she married John Davidson (1890–1954), a medical doctor, and with him had a daughter, Manora Joy Davidson (1920–1999). After the birth of her daughter she largely retired from acting. In 1939 she and her family were living at 140 Manchester Road in Sheffield. Manora Thew died in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England in 1987. In her will she left £116,050.
