Northwest Territories General Election, 2003
The 2003 Northwest Territories general election was held on November 24, 2003, to elect the 19 members of the Legislative Assembly. The election was called on October 27. Premier (Canada), Premier Stephen Kakfwi had previously chosen not to run. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political party, political parties; the List of Northwest Territories premiers, premier is subsequently chosen by and from the Member of the Legislative Assembly, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). There were 21,474 registered voters at the time of the election. Legislative Assembly Of The Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The federal name was changed when the Northwest Territories Act was rewritten in 2014. Under different periods of its history it has alternated names. Brendan Bell (born August 17, 1971 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American-born Canadian territorial level politician and former cabinet minister. He was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election. He won the Yellowknife South district defeating former Yellowknife Mayor Pat McMahon. He was re-elected by acclamation in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. At the beginning of his second term he was appointed to the Executive Council and has been appointed to three portfolios as Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Minister of Justice and Minister Responsible for the Homeless. Dave Ramsay (born March 18, 1970 in Saint John, New Brunswick) is a Yellowknife businessman and politician. Roger T. Allen (born 5 May 1952 ) in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, from Gwich'in First Nations, is a Canadian former cross-country skier who competed in the 1972 Winter Olympics and a former territorial-level politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. Cross-country skiing Allen was one of six of eight cross-country skiers sent to the 1972 Olympics who came from the Mackenzie Delta town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Allen finished 50th in the 15 km men's and 13th in the relay 4x10 men's races. Roger was part of the Territorial Experimental Ski Training Program at Grollier Hall (Residential School). Growing up, Allen was exposed to multiple sports in the parochial school system in Inuvik which helped him balance education, sport, and spirituality. Jane Mary "Ostler" Groenewegen (born November 8, 1956) is a territorial level politician from northern Canada and a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Political career Groenewegen was first elected to a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. She was returned by acclamation in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election. She was appointed to the cabinet by Premier Stephen Kakfwi and she served as Deputy Premier Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Seniors, Persons with Disabilities and the Status of Women. Bill Braden (born 1954) is a former politician and former news reporter in Northwest Territories, Canada and a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories. Biography Braden was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. After graduating high school in 1972, Bill worked for a number of different news papers including the Edmonton Journal. Charles Dent (born July 20, 1951 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian politician, is a former radio station manager, a volunteer fire fighter, a former municipal level politician and a long serving cabinet minister in the Northwest Territories territorial government. Early life Son of Aileen and Ivor Dent. Ivor served as mayor of Edmonton 1968-1974 and the first president of the Alberta NDP, founded in 1962. Dent graduated from the University of Alberta and moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, in 1976. He founded a radio station after he arrived in Yellowknife, CJCD-FM Mix 100. He managed that station until he was elected as an MLA in 1991. Dent began his political career on the Yellowknife city council.
