The Northwest International League was a minor league baseball league that played briefly in the 1919 season. The four–team Class B level league evolved from the 1918 Pacific Coast International League, with franchises based in Washington and British Columbia. History In 1919, the Pacific Coast International League, which was formerly the Northwestern League, changed its name to become the "Northwest International League" for the 1919 season, before reverting to the Pacific Coast International League name for the 1920 season. J. M. Osmond served as president of the 1919 Northwest International League. The Pacific Coast International League was a minor league baseball league that played between 1918 and 1922. The Class B level league franchises were based in the Northwest United States and British Columbia. Joe Devine (scout)
Joseph Vincent Devine (March 3, 1892 – September 21, 1951) was a baseball scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees, credited for signing Joe DiMaggio to the Yankees. Baseball career Born in Oakland, California, Devine was an outfielder in the minor leagues, and was on the spring training roster of the Boston Red Sox in 1917, but never advanced to the majors. He managed a local team in Seattle during World War I, scouted with Seattle Rainiers, and managed a baseball team in Calgary before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. After the Pirates he managed the Mission Reds of San Francisco. By 1932 he was hired by Paul Krichell to be the New York Yankees chief scout in the West. Bill Speas
William John Speas, Sr. (August 17, 1887 – January 13, 1969) was a long-time minor league baseball player and manager. He played in the minor leagues for 22 seasons, from 1906 to 1927, and managed at that level from 1918 to 1929. Playing career Speas began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 1906, suiting up for the Mansfield Giants of the Ohio–Pennsylvania League. He remained in that league until 1908, moving to the Pacific Coast League for the first time in 1909, playing for the Portland Beavers. Moving to the Northwestern League in 1911, Speas remained there until partway through the 1913 campaign, when he returned to Portland and the PCL, where he remained until 1916. He also spent part of 1916 with the PCL's San Francisco Seals. During the height of his career, Speas was considered one of the best fielders in the Pacific Coast League and was once said to have had the best throwing arm in the league.
