Northern Voice
Northern Voice was an annual blogging, social software and online communities conference held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 2005 to 2013. The conference was organized by members of the Vancouver blogging community, who attempted to keep the event accessible to as many people as possible. Keynote speakers at Northern Voice included Anil Dash (then of Six Apart), Matt Mullenweg of WordPress, Nora Young of CBC Radio, Chris Messina, April Smith and Chris Wilson. Nora Young
Nora Young is a Canadian broadcaster and writer. She was the first host of CBC Radio's ''Definitely Not the Opera'', from 1994 to 2002. Since 2007, she has been the host of ''Spark'' on CBC Radio One. Norah Young was born and raised in Toronto. She earned an MA in political science from McGill University. In the early 1990s, she worked as a freelance commentator for CBC Radio's new program ''Brand X'', aimed at younger listeners from Generation X. ''Brand X'' was cancelled after its first season and was replaced by ''Definitely Not The Opera'' (nicknamed ''DNTO'') in 1994. Young was hired as the first host of ''DNTO'', and relocated to Winnipeg where it was recorded. When it began, ''DNTO'' was a four-hour magazine-style program about pop culture, aimed at a slightly older audience than ''Brand X'' had targeted. Unconference
An unconference is a participant-driven meeting. The term "unconference" has been applied, or self-applied, to a wide range of gatherings that try to avoid hierarchical aspects of a conventional conference, such as sponsored presentations and top-down organization. History According to Tim O'Reilly, the first unconference (reducing the usual emphasis on formal speeches and emphasizing informal connections instead) was organized by Alexander von Humboldt in 1828. The term "unconference" first appeared in an announcement for the annual XML developers conference in 1998. Unconferences often use variations on Open Space Technology, the format/method developed by Harrison Owen in 1985. Kris Krug
The kris, or ''keris'' in the Indonesian language, is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade-patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron and nickelous iron (''pamor''). Of Javanese origin, the kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, although many have straight blades as well, and is one of the weapons commonly used in the '' pencak silat'' martial art native to Indonesia. Chris Messina (open Source Advocate)
Christopher Reaves Messina (born January 7, 1981) is an American blogger, product consultant and speaker who is the inventor of the hashtag as it is currently used on social media platforms. In a 2007 tweet, Messina proposed vertical/associational grouping of messages, trends, and events on Twitter by the means of hashtags. The hashtag was intended to be a type of metadata tag that allowed users to apply dynamic, user-generated tagging, which made it possible for others to easily find messages with a specific theme or content. It allowed easy, informal markup of folksonomy without need of any formal taxonomy or markup language. Hashtags have since been referred to as the "eavesdroppers", "wormholes", "time-machines", and "veins" of the Internet. CBC Radio is the English-language radio operations of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The CBC operates a number of radio networks serving different audiences and programming niches, all of which (regardless of language) are outlined below. Six Apart Ltd., sometimes abbreviated 6A, is a software company known for creating the Movable Type blogware, TypePad blog hosting service, and Vox (the blogging platform).
