Northern Grampians Shire
The Shire of Northern Grampians is a local government area in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 11,431, having fallen from 12,087 in 2008. It includes the towns of Stawell, St Arnaud, Great Western, Marnoo, Glenorchy, Stuart Mill, Navarre and the tourist town of Halls Gap. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the City of Stawell, Town of St Arnaud, Shire of Stawell, Shire of Kara Kara and parts of the Shire of Wimmera, Shire of Dunmunkle and Shire of Donald. The Shire is governed and administered by the Northern Grampians Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Stawell, it also has a service centre located in St Arnaud. St Arnaud, Victoria
St Arnaud is a town in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia, 244 kilometres north west of the capital Melbourne. It is in the Shire of Northern Grampians local government area. At the , St Arnaud had a population of 2,318. It is named after French marshal Jacques Leroy de Saint Arnaud, commander-in-chief of the army of the East. It is one of quite a number of towns, streets etc. named after people and places of the Crimean War. History St Arnaud is a former gold mining town, situated on the main route between Ballarat and Mildura. The town was settled in the mid-1850s, the post office opening on 1 February 1856. The Shire of Donald was a local government area about west-northwest of Bendigo, in western Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1861 until 1995. History Donald was originally incorporated as the St Arnaud Road District on 25 June 1861, which became a shire on 22 November 1864. The Shire of Dunmunkle was a local government area about west of Bendigo and east of Horsham, in western Victoria, Australia. The shire was bounded by the Yarriambiack Creek on the western boundary and the Richardson River on the east. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1877 until 1995. History Dunmunkle was first incorporated as a shire on 28 September 1877. In May 1916, the shire lost part of its North Riding to the Shire of Donald, but gained parts of the South and East Ridings of the Shire of Warracknabeal. The Shire of Wimmera was a local government area in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The municipality covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. Although its shire offices were located in Horsham, Horsham itself was governed by a separate council after it succeeded in 1882. History The Wimmera road district was incorporated on 3 March 1862, and this district became a shire on 4 March 1864. It was originally a very large district, including a significant portion of Walpeup, plus Arapiles, Dimboola, Dunmunkle, Kaniva, Kowree and Lowan, centred on the town of Horsham. The City of Stawell was a local government area about west-northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1869 until 1995. Its area was surrounded by the separate and largely rural Shire of Stawell. History Stawell was incorporated as a borough on 12 November 1869, and became a town on 18 September 1957. Halls Gap, Victoria
Halls Gap is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on Grampians Road, adjacent to the Grampians National Park, in the Shire of Northern Grampians local government area. The town is set in the Fyans Valley at the foot of the Wonderland and Mount William ranges. At the 2016 census Halls Gap had a population of 430. The approximate driving time from Melbourne is 3 hours. History The first settler was Charles Browning Hall who set out in search of a suitable grazing run when he found the cattle market at Port Phillip overstocked in 1841. Establishing a station just east of the Grampians in a spot known as "Mokepilli" to the indigenous inhabitants the Mukjarawaint. Navarre, Victoria
Navarre is a town in the Wimmera region of the Australian state of Victoria. The town is in the Shire of Northern Grampians and Shire of Pyrenees local government areas, north west of the state capital, Melbourne and north east of the regional centre of Stawell. At the , Navarre and the surrounding area had a population of 99. Navarre began as the site of an inn established in 1848 alongside a stock route. This was joined by a second inn in 1850. The discovery of gold at Mount Alexander in 1851 saw the inns become a popular stopping point for miners on their way to the diggings. The town was surveyed in 1855 and renamed after the medieval European Kingdom of Navarre. Navarre Post Office opened on 2 February 1856.
