Northern Elements Progressive Union
The Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) was the first political party in Northern Nigeria. Founded in Kano on 8 August 1950, it was the offshoot of a pre-existing political association called the Northern Elements Progressive Association. It became the main opposition party in Northern Nigeria after the region was granted self-governance in the 1950s. In the First Republic it maintained a steady alliance with Zikist National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) against the Northern People's Congress (NPC)-dominated Federal Government. Aminu Kano
Aminu Kano (9 August 1920 — 17 April 1983) was a Muslim politician from Nigeria born at Sudawa, Gwale Local Government and resided at Gwammaja, Dala Local Government. In the 1940s he led a socialist movement in the northern part of the country in opposition to British rule. The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and the Aminu Kano College of Islamic Studies all in Kano, are named after him. He was a relative to the father of former Head of State Murtala Mohammed, former Minister of Defense Inuwa Wada and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Aminu Bashir Wali. Zikism
Zikism is the system of political thought attributed to Nnamdi Azikiwe ("Zik"), one of the founding fathers of modern Nigeria and the first democratically elected President of Nigeria. Azikiwe expanded on this philosophy through his published works such as ''Renascent Africa'' (1973) and his autobiography ''My Odyssey''. Zikism also spurred a group of young men to take a militant stand against colonial rule in Nigeria. Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila (21 March 1946 – 11 January 2003) was a Nigerian politician and administrator. Sa'adu Zungur
Sa'adu Zungur (1915 - 1958) was a Nigerian politician and poet who was among early scholars in Northern Nigeria to call for the reform of the society through education during colonial rule. Early life and education Zungur was born in 1915 in Bauchi. His father was the Limamin Bauchi. He began his elementary schooling at Bauchi Primary School in 1926 and attended Katsina Higher College in 1929. Zungur was at Yaba Technical College in Lagos in 1934. Career After leaving Yaba Technical College in Lagos, Zungur became a teacher at the Kano School of Hygiene until 1940 and then at the Zaria School of Pharmacy where he became the head of the school in 1941. While in Zaria, he formed a Zaria Friendly Society and formed a close friendship and alliance with Aminu Kano. He returned to Bauchi after falling ill with lung sickness. Northern People's Congress (NPC) is a political party in Nigeria. Formed in June 1949, the party held considerable influence in the Northern Region from the 1950s until the military coup of 1966. It was formerly a cultural organization known as Jamiyaar Mutanem Arewa.
