North West Triathlon Club
North West Triathlon Club (NWTC) is based in Derry in Northern Ireland. The club was formed in 1983 at Templemore Sports Complex in the city and hosts one of Ireland's longest running triathlon events, the Liam Ball Sprint triathlon. The event is named in memory of Irish Olympic swimmer Liam Ball, who represented Ireland in Mexico in 1968 and Munich in 1972, and died aged 32. NWTC also hosts the annual firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, a sprint with distance race which involves a swim in the fast flowing River Foyle with the cycle and run stages taking in Derry's three main road bridges. Derry
Derry, officially Londonderry (), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fifth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name ''Derry'' is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name (modern Irish: ) meaning 'oak grove'. Liam Ball
Liam Ball (17 May 1951 – 16 June 1984) was an Irish Olympic swimmer at both the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich Olympic Summer Games, competing for Ireland in the Men's 100 metres Breaststroke and Men's 200 metres Breaststroke at each. He was born in Derry, Northern Ireland and was a past pupil of St. Columb's College in the city. A local hero, Ball appears in a mural on Creggan's Central Drive. River Foyle
The River Foyle () is a river in west Ulster in the northwest of the island of Ireland, which flows from the confluence of the rivers Finn and Mourne at the towns of Lifford in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, and Strabane in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Aileen Reid
Aileen Reid (née Morrison; born 15 June 1982 in Derry, Northern Ireland) is a professional triathlete from Northern Ireland who represented Ireland at the London 2012 & Rio 2016 Olympics. Reid represents the North West Triathlon Club and competes for French team ''Poissy''. Also an accomplished runner and swimmer, Reid is a former NI Cross country champion, and won a medal at the World University Cross Country championships with Team Ireland.
