North Shropshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
North Shropshire is a constituency in the county of Shropshire, represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Helen Morgan of the Liberal Democrats after a by-election on 16 December 2021. The former MP, Owen Paterson of the Conservatives, resigned his seat on 5 November 2021 when faced with suspension from the Commons for a breach of advocacy rules and the consequent possibility of a recall petition. The seat had previously been a safe seat for the Conservatives. Constituency profile The area is rural and north of Shrewsbury, west of Newcastle-under-Lyme in the Stoke conurbation, south of Cheshire and Wrexham, having five small towns (in size order): Oswestry, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Wem and Ellesmere. Residents' health and wealth are similar to UK averages. Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill
Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill (10 May 1800 – 3 January 1875), known as Sir Rowland Hill, Bt, between 1824 and 1842, was a British peer and Tory politician. Background Hill was the son of Colonel John Hill, eldest son of Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Philip Cornish, while the renowned military figures Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, Thomas Noel Hill, Robert Chambre Hill and Clement Delves Hill were his uncles. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he graduated MA in 1820. Political career Hill was returned to Parliament for Shropshire in 1821, a seat he held until 1832, when the constituency was abolished. He then represented North Shropshire between 1832 and 1842. He succeeded his grandfather as fourth Baronet of Hawkstone in 1824. In 1842 he also succeeded his uncle as second Viscount Hill according to a special remainder in the letters patent and was able to take a seat in the House of Lords. Edward Herbert, 3rd Earl Of Powis
Edward James Herbert, 3rd Earl of Powis (5 November 1818 – 7 May 1891), styled Viscount Clive between 1839 and 1848, was a British peer and politician. Background Powis was born at The Angel Hotel, Pershore, Worcestershire, the eldest son of Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, and Lady Lucy, daughter of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose. Sir Percy Egerton Herbert was his younger brother and also a Member of Parliament. Education He was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge, where he was president of the University Pitt Club, and he graduated as MA in 1840 and LLD in 1848. He was also awarded an honorary degree as DCL by Oxford University. Charles Cust
Charles Henry Cust (27 September 1813 – 19 May 1875) was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Background Cust was the second son of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow, and his first wife Sophia, daughter of Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Baronet. John Egerton, Viscount Alford, was his elder brother. Military and political career Cust was a Captain in the Royal Horse Guards. In 1859 he was appointed High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and in 1865 was returned to Parliament for Shropshire North. He held the seat only until the following year, when he was succeeded by his nephew, Adelbert Brownlow-Cust Family Cust married Caroline, daughter of Reginald George Macdonald, in 1842. He died in May 1875, aged 61. Caroline died in October 1887.
