North Mahaska Community School District
North Mahaska Community School District is a rural public school district located in New Sharon, IA. The district is located mainly in Mahaska County, with a small portion in Poweshiek County, and serves the cities of New Sharon, Barnes City, the unincorporated communities of Lacey and Taintor, and the surrounding rural areas. Angela Livezey has served as superintendent since 2015. History The communities of Barnes City, Lacey, Taintor, and New Sharon joined to form North Mahaska Community School in 1956. In 1997, a bond issue was passed to build a new Elementary School. In 1999, a new elementary school was completed which connects to the Jr. and Sr. High School by a hallway. In 2008, the North Mahaska Community School District Early Childhood education center opened, housing the preschool for ages 3 and 4 as well as the Sunshine and Smiles Daycare Center. South Iowa Cedar League
The South Iowa Cedar League is a high school athletic conference in south central and southeastern Iowa. The conference is made up of mostly 1A schools, as well as a few 2A schools (the two smallest classes in the state). A 9-team league from the 1960s, the conference expanded to 12 teams in 1996, then dropped to 11 members when Williamsburg joined the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference in 2000. In the fall of 2014, the schools of the SICL voted to allow Colfax–Mingo to join the SICL, making it a 12-team league again. Barnes City, Iowa
Barnes City is a city in Mahaska and Poweshiek counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 156 at the 2020 census. History Barnes City was founded under the name of New Barnes until the town of Barnes City was chartered in 1898. Barnes City came about as a result of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad needing a central link between Montezuma and Thornburg. It was decided that a small depot be built halfway in between these two communities, and this happened to be on the property owned by James Barnes in 1881; hence the name Barnes City. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
