North American Football Confederation
The North American Football Confederation (NAFC) was founded in 1946 as the governing body of association football in Northern America, Mexico, and Cuba. The first president of the NAFC was Carlos Alonso who was elected on 19 December 1946 in Havana. In 1961 it merged with the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (CCCF) to form CONCACAF. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposition by moving the ball beyond the goal line into a rectangular framed goal defended by the opposing side. Traditionally, the game has been played over two 45 minute halves, for a total match time of 90 minutes. The North American Nations Cup was the association football (soccer) championship for the CONCACAF's North American Zone. Overview The tournament was seen as a disappointment, with promoters complaining that the Mexico Football Federation's decision to send their first choice team to play against Argentina in Buenos Aires had a severe effect on attendances. Promoter ''ProLinks Vice-President Fred Guzman commented that "We're disappointed because we expected Mexico's fans to carry the tournament. But where were the U.S. fans? The U.S. federation has to create a situation where people rally around the national team." The Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (Central American Football Union), more commonly known by the acronym UNCAF, represents the national football teams of Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The Corona Three Nations Cup (also referred to as the North American Nations Cup or North American Championship) was an association football championship for CONCACAF's North American Zone. Overview The North American Football Confederation (NAFC) held a similar competition in 1947 and 1949. While Canada was a founding member of the NAFC, it did not participate in the first two championships. In 1990, the North American Zone re-introduced its championship, hosted by Canada. Although Mexico and Canada sent their full national teams, the U.S. sent its B-team and does not count these games as part of its official internationals. 1949 NAFC Championship
The 1949 NAFC Championship was the second edition of the association football championship for the North American Football Confederation. In 1949, the NAFC Championship served both as a regional championship as well as the regional qualification tournament for the 1950 FIFA World Cup and was held in Mexico City. Four teams were invited, Cuba, Mexico, Canada and the United States, but Canada did not send a team. Mexico easily topped the standings, going undefeated and outscoring the two other teams seventeen goals to two. The United States came in second and Cuba, winless in its four games, was third. As the top two teams qualified for the World Cup, Mexico and the U.S. went to the finals in Brazil.
