North Alabama Lions Men's Basketball
The North Alabama Lions men's basketball team represents University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, United States. The school's team currently competes in the ASUN Conference. On July 1, 2018 they joined the ASUN Conference in all sports, excluding men's football which will compete in the Big South. History The men's basketball program at the University of North Alabama is one of the most successful in collegiate basketball, having claimed two national championships, made five Final Four appearances and played in 14 NCAA championship tournaments. The foundation for UNA's success in basketball, and its entire athletic program, was put in place by Eddie Flowers. After coming to UNA (then Florence State Teachers College) in 1929, Flowers began the school's athletic program in 1932 and coached the first basketball team that season. ASUN Conference
The ASUN Conference, formerly the Atlantic Sun Conference, is a collegiate athletic conference operating mostly in the Southeastern United States. The league participates at the NCAA Division I level, and began sponsoring football at the Division I FCS level in 2022. Originally established as the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC) in 1978, it was renamed as the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2001, and then rebranded as the ASUN Conference in 2016. Florence, Alabama
Florence is a city in, and the county seat of, Lauderdale County, Alabama, United States, in the state's northwestern corner. It is situated along the Tennessee River and is home to the University of North Alabama, the oldest college in the state. Tony Pujol
Antonio Javier Pujol is an American college basketball coach, and the current head coach of the North Alabama Lions men's basketball team. Playing career Pujol played both basketball and baseball at Sterling College in Kansas, where he earned all-conference honors in baseball three-straight seasons. Coaching career Pujol's coaching career began in 1992 when he became the head boys basketball coach at La Progresiva Presbyterian HS in Miami, Florida. In 1995, Pujol accepted the head boys basketball coaching position at Northwest Christian Academy in Miami, where he stayed for 13 seasons and posted a 250-46 record, while winning state titles in 1999, 2003 and 2004. Pujol broke through in the college ranks as an assistant coach at Appalachian State in 2004 under Houston Fancher. Flowers Hall
CB&S Bank Arena at Flowers Hall, built in 1972, is a 4,000-seat multipurpose arena located in Florence, Alabama. It is used primarily for basketball and volleyball, and is the home of the University of North Alabama Lions basketball and volleyball teams. The first basketball game in the arena was a preseason NBA basketball game between the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks. It has also hosted high school basketball games as well. The main court at the arena has been replaced four times, most recently in 2018. In 2004 new scorers' tables and scoreboards were installed, including a center-hung scoreboard that replaced the one installed in 1985. Chairback seats were installed in 1989 on the home side and are sold only to season-ticket holders. The North Alabama Lions are the athletic teams of the University of North Alabama, located in Florence, Alabama. The Lions are a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and compete within the ASUN Conference. The university has a total of 14 varsity sports teams, six men's teams and eight women's teams. The fall of 2018 marked the Lions first year of their transition into Division I. The University of North Alabama (UNA) is a public university in Florence, Alabama. It is the state's oldest public university. Occupying a campus in a residential section of Florence, UNA is located within a four-city area that also includes Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals. The four cities compose a metropolitan area with a combined population of 140,000 people. The University of North Alabama was founded as LaGrange College in 1830. Bill Jones (basketball, Born 1944)
William E. Jones (born September 4, 1944) is an American retired college basketball head coach. He guided the Jacksonville State University men's basketball team to the 1985 NCAA Division II national championship. That year, the Gamecocks lost their first game of the season but then went on to win 31 consecutive games to claim the national title. They went 16–0 in Gulf South Conference play en route to the school-record 31–1 mark. In his career at Jacksonville State, he guided them to 8 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and 6 Gulf South championships. Jones oversaw the program's transition from Division II to Division I in the 1995–96 season when they joined the Trans America Athletic Conference. Jones also played for Jacksonville State, earning varsity letters in 1964–65 and 1965–66. NCAA Division II
NCAA Division II (D-II) is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. Before 1973, the NCAA's smaller schools were grouped together in the College Division. In 1973, the College Division split in two when the NCAA began using numeric designations for its competitions.
