Norman Vickar
Norman Vickar (February 21, 1917 – October 17, 2015) was a political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Melfort from 1975 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was the second Jewish member elected to the Saskatchewan assembly. He was born in Brooksby, Saskatchewan, the son of Samuel Vickar and Gertrude Gelmon. In 1947, Vickar married Florence Ivy. He was mayor of Melfort from 1971 to 1975. Vickar served in the Saskatchewan cabinet as Minister of Industry and Commerce. He was defeated by Grant Hodgins when he ran for reelection to the provincial assembly in 1982. The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. Melfort (provincial Electoral District)
Melfort is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. The city of Melfort (population 5,992) is the largest centre in the constituency. Smaller communities in the district include the towns of Watson, Star City, Leroy, and Naicam; and the villages of Quill Lake, Spalding, Beatty, Englefeld, and Annaheim. The riding has existed since the 1912 election. History The riding initially returned primarily NDP members, starting with Arthur Thibault. The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The name was changed to the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association (SGGA) when Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. Grant Milton Hodgins (born July 22, 1955) is a former political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Melfort from 1982 to 1991 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Progressive Conservative and then independent member.
