Norman Kirkman
Norman Kirkman (6 June 1920 – 17 November 1995) was an English footballer who played as a full-back for various clubs in the Football League in the 1940s and 1950s, before a brief career as a manager. Football career Playing career Kirkman was born in Bolton and attended Folds Road School. His football career started when he joined Burnley in May 1939, but his professional career was immediately interrupted by the Second World War. During the war, he trained as an R.A.F. navigator and represented the R.A.F. in a football match against an Army team. He also made guest appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Manchester United. After he was "demobbed", he returned to Burnley before being signed by Rochdale in October 1946. Bolton
Bolton (, locally ) is a large town in Greater Manchester in North West England, formerly a part of Lancashire. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish people, Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Demobilization
Demobilization or demobilisation (see spelling differences) is the process of standing down a nation's armed forces from combat-ready status. This may be as a result of victory in war, or because a crisis has been peacefully resolved and military force will not be necessary. The opposite of demobilization is mobilization. Forceful demobilization of a defeated enemy is called demilitarization. The United Nations defined demobilization as "a multifaceted process that officially certifies an individual's change of status from being a member of a military grouping of some kind to being a civilian". Persons undergoing demobilization are removed from the command and control of their armed force and group and the transformation from a military mindset to that of a civilian begins. Player-manager
A player-coach (also playing coach, captain-coach, or player-manager) is a member of a sports team who simultaneously holds both playing and coaching duties. A player-coach may be a head coach or an assistant coach. They may make changes to the squad and also play on the team. Very few current major professional sports teams have head coaches who are also players, though it is common for senior players to take a role in managing more junior athletes. Historically, when professional sports had less money to pay players and coaches or managers, player-coaches were more common. Peter Sillett
Richard Peter Tudor Sillett (1 February 1933 – 13 March 1998) was an English footballer. He played for Chelsea and Southampton as a right-back, and made three appearances for England. He was the older brother of John Sillett, who managed Coventry City to FA Cup success in 1987. Sir Stanley Matthews once said that Sillett was the best full-back he ever played against. Southampton Peter was the son of Charlie Sillett (who was a full-back with Southampton from 1931 to 1938) and inherited his father's skills. He joined the Saints in January 1949 and soon afterwards gained England Youth recognition. Extremely well-built, weighing over 13 stone when only 18, Sillett matured quickly into a full-back of some distinction. The 1951–52 season was the 72nd season of competitive football in England. Overview Four years after guiding them to glory in the FA Cup, Matt Busby guided Manchester United to their first league title triumph in 41 years. While still captained by Johnny Carey and featuring several other players from the 1948 FA Cup winning team, Busby was now giving regular action to young players including Roger Byrne, Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower, and had already invested in the future by making a move for the young goalkeeper Ray Wood. Jack Gregory (footballer, Born 1925)
John Leslie Gregory (25 January 1925 – March 2008) was an English professional footballer who played as a full back for Southampton and Leyton Orient during the 1940s and 1950s. Playing career Southampton Gregory was born in Southampton and after playing youth football with Woolston Youth Club, he was signed by Southampton as a professional in December 1944. He made his first team debut as a replacement for Bill Rochford in a 3–1 defeat to Luton Town at a snow-covered Dell on 22 February 1947. Gregory spent most of his Southampton career in the reserves and his next first team appearance came on 23 September 1950. After another spell in the reserves, he replaced Norman Kirkman for the final five games of the season. Ted Ballard
Edgar Albert Ballard (16 June 1920 – 10 June 2008) was an English professional footballer who played as a full-back for Southampton in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Playing career Ballard was born in Brentford and spent the war years working in a munitions factory in Hayes, Middlesex. His birthplace was only 50 yards from Griffin Park and he made one wartime appearance before signing as a professional for Leyton Orient in April 1946. He spent the 1946–47 season playing for Orient in the Third Division South before moving to The Dell in June 1947, with Bill Stroud moving in the opposite direction. He made his debut for Southampton at home to West Ham United on 31 January 1948, replacing the injured Joe Mallett at centre half. After a run of eight games, he lost his place and spent the next season in the reserves. The 1950–51 season was the 71st season of competitive football in England. Overview Tottenham Hotspur won their first League Championship, while Newcastle United defeated Blackpool 2–0 to win their fourth FA Cup. They would win it twice more over the next four seasons.
