Norman Brudy
Norman Brudy (1919–2000) was a salesman, government lobbyist and a Canadian communist politician and perennial candidate. He served for a time as leader of the Communist Party of Alberta. Political career Brudy ran as a Labor-Progressive Party candidate in the 1953 Canadian federal election. He was badly defeated finishing last out of five candidates in the Regina City electoral district to incumbent Co-operative Commonwealth Federation Member of Parliament Alfred Claude Ellis. In 1968, Brudy had a falling-out with the Communist Party and was squeezed out of the executive committee after criticizing the party's policies and the Soviet Union. Brudy moved to Toronto, Ontario and began lobbying the provincial government for rent control laws, which were enacted in 1975. A communist party is a political party that seeks to realize the socio-economic goals of communism. The term ''communist party'' was popularized by the title of ''The Manifesto of the Communist Party'' (1848) by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. As a vanguard party, the communist party guides the political education and development of the working class (proletariat). 1984 Canadian Federal Election
The 1984 Canadian federal election was held on September 4, 1984, to elect members to the House of Commons of the 33rd Parliament of Canada. In one of the largest landslide victories in Canadian political history, the Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party), led by Brian Mulroney, defeated the incumbent governing Liberal Party led by Prime Minister John Turner. This was the first election since 1958 in which the PC Party won a majority government. Mulroney's victory came as a result of his building of a 'grand coalition' that comprised social conservatives from the West, Red Tories from the East, Quebec nationalists, and fiscal conservatives. Naomi Rankin
Naomi Rankin (born c. 1953) is a Canadian politician and the leader of the Communist Party – Alberta since 1992. She is the longest-serving political party leader in the province, and has run as a perennial candidate in every federal and provincial election in Alberta since 1982. Political career Rankin became leader of the Communist Party in Alberta in 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union sent the party into crisis. Since 1982, she has run in every provincial and federal election for the Communist Party – Alberta and the Communist Party of Canada respectively. Rankin herself usually fields around 100 votes. In a typical election campaign, Rankin goes door-to-door and distributes pamphlets, as she tries to engage voters in discussions about the party's main platforms. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. Robert Hicks (Canadian Politician)
Robert Nelson David Hicks (4 June 1933 – 25 November 2014) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He became a teacher and school principal by career. Hicks studied at McMaster University and the University of Ottawa. He was an educator and served as principal of Joseph Howe Senior Public School in Toronto. He represented the Ontario riding of Scarborough East which he won in the 1984 federal election and was re-elected in 1988. He served in the 32nd and 33rd Canadian Parliaments, then left national politics in 1993 and did not campaign in that year's federal election.
