Naomi Rankin
Naomi Rankin (born c. 1953) is a Canadian politician and the leader of the Communist Party – Alberta since 1992. She is the longest-serving political party leader in the province, and has run as a perennial candidate in every federal and provincial election in Alberta since 1982. Political career Rankin became leader of the Communist Party in Alberta in 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union sent the party into crisis. Since 1982, she has run in every provincial and federal election for the Communist Party – Alberta and the Communist Party of Canada respectively. Rankin herself usually fields around 100 votes. In a typical election campaign, Rankin goes door-to-door and distributes pamphlets, as she tries to engage voters in discussions about the party's main platforms. The Communist Party – Alberta (french: Parti communiste de l'Alberta) is the provincial section of the Communist Party of Canada in Alberta. History Alberta had recognized Communist Party speakers and activists starting at the time of the founding of the Communist Party of Canada in 1922. Ray Martin (politician)
Raymond James Martin (born August 8, 1941) is a politician in Alberta, Canada and former member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Martin served four terms as an Alberta MLA and two terms as an Edmonton Public School Board Trustee. In 2018, Martin published his memoir, "''Made in Alberta: The Ray Martin Story''". Early life Born in 1941 in Delia, Alberta, Martin attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He later attended the University of Calgary in order to earn his master's degree. He taught in Edmonton public schools. Elizabeth Emily Paschen (February 26, 1927 - March 14, 2019) was a Canadian environmentalist and former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. She served as Leader of the Alberta Greens from its founding in 1990 to 1996. Political career Paschen became leader of the Alberta Greens after founder Norman Conrad moved out of the province. She first ran for provincial office in a by-election held in the Edmonton-Strathcona electoral district on October 18, 1990. Barrie Chivers
Barrie Chivers (born November 8, 1940) is a Canadian former politician and current lawyer. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1990 to 1993 sitting with the official opposition Alberta New Democrats. Legal career Chivers has been admitted to the law society in Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He founded his first law firm in 1973 Wright, Chivers & Co. to practice criminal and labour law. In 1987 after his partner went into provincial politics he founded Chivers-Greckol exclusively in labour, employment and human rights law. He left his practice in 1990 after winning a seat in the legislature. After his defeat from office Chivers resumed his legal career with the firm of Chivers Carpenter Lawyers. The 1993 Alberta general election was held on June 15, 1993, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Conservative government was re-elected, taking 51 seats out of 83 (61 percent of the seats) but only having support of 45 percent of voters. Linda Sloan (born June 27, 1960) is a Canadian politician and municipal councillor in Edmonton, Alberta. Sloan graduated from the Foothills Hospital School of Nursing in 1982 and began work as a registered nurse. She soon became involved in the Staff Nurses Associations of Alberta (which she led from 1992 until 1997), the National Federation of Nurses Unions, and the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses. Weslyn Melva Mather (née Dunford; October 2, 1945 – November 22, 2015) was a provincial politician in the Canadian province of Alberta.
