Francis Walker (entomologist)
Francis Walker (31 July 1809 – 5 October 1874) was an English entomologist. He was born in Southgate, London, on 31 July 1809 and died at Wanstead, England on 5 October 1874. He was one of the most prolific authors in entomology, and stirred controversy during his later life as his publications resulted in a huge number of junior synonyms. However, his assiduous work on the collections of the British Museum had great significance. Between June 1848 and late 1873 Walker was contracted by John Edward Gray Director of the British Museum to catalogue their insects (except Coleoptera) that is Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Nolidae
Nolidae is a family of moths with about 1,700 described species worldwide. They are mostly small with dull coloration, the main distinguishing feature being a silk cocoon with a vertical exit slit. The group is sometimes known as tuft moths, after the tufts of raised scales on the forewings of two subfamilies, Nolinae and Collomeninae. The larvae also tend to have muted colors and tufts of short hairs. Formerly, this group was included in the Noctuidae. A MONA number (short for Moths of North America), or Hodges number after Ronald W. Hodges, is part of a numbering system for North American moths found north of Mexico in the Continental United States and Canada, as well as the island of Greenland. Introduced in 1983 by Hodges through the publication of ''Check List of the Lepidoptera of America North of Mexico'', the system began an ongoing numeration process in order to compile a list of the over 12,000 moths of North America north of Mexico. The system numbers moths within the same family close together for identification purposes. For example, the species ''Epimartyria auricrinella'' begins the numbering system at 0001 while ''Epimartyria pardella'' is numbered 0002. ''Nola'' is a genus of moths described by William Elford Leach in 1815. They are the namesake of the subfamily Nolinae and the Family (biology), family Nolidae. This genus occurs worldwide wherever suitable habitat is present. Description Palpi porrect (extending forward), moderately long with thick scales. Antennae fasciculated in male. Mid tibia with single spur pair, whereas hind tibia with two pairs. Forewings with vein 5 from angle of cell, vein 6 from upper angle, veins 7 and 8 stalked and veins 8 and 10 absent. Hindwing with vein 3 from before angle of cell, vein 5 absent, veins 6 and 7 stalked and vein 8 from middle of cell.
