Nobuyuki Otsu
graduated from the Department of Mathematical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tokyo in 1969. He finished the master’s course in mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics of the University of Tokyo in 1971. Obtained Doctor of Engineering from University of Tokyo in 1981. He joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) in 1971. He has been engaged in the research of pattern recognition theory and its application. Had been Visiting Researcher at Canada National Research Council, Director of Mathematical Information Laboratory at Software Division, and Director of Information Science Laboratory at Information Science Division. Became Chief Senior Researcher in 1990 and Director of Machine Understanding Division in 1991. Also he hold adjunct professorships in two universities. Otsu's Method
In computer vision and image processing, Otsu's method, named after , is used to perform automatic image thresholding. In the simplest form, the algorithm returns a single intensity threshold that separate pixels into two classes, foreground and background. This threshold is determined by minimizing intra-class intensity variance, or equivalently, by maximizing inter-class variance. Otsu's method is a one-dimensional discrete analogue of Fisher's Discriminant Analysis, is related to Jenks optimization method, and is equivalent to a globally optimal k-means performed on the intensity histogram.
