Welch, a native of Windsor, Ontario, owned an independent bookstore in Oshawa for a number of years before deciding to study animation at Sheridan College, where he released his first short film, ''Disconnected'', as a student project in 1988. He subsequently joined the National Film Board of Canada, for whom he made both ''No Problem'' (1992) and ''How Wings Are Attached to the Backs of Angels'' (1996). Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations. Richard Condie
Richard Condie, (born 1942) is a Canadian animator, filmmaker, musician and voice actor. Condie is best known for his 1985 animated short ''The Big Snit'' at the National Film Board of Canada and has won six international awards for ''Getting Started'' in 1979. Condie lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Education and career Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Condie moved to Winnipeg at the age of four. There he attended Kelvin High School, graduating in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Manitoba in 1967. Prior to entering the animation field, he worked periodic stints as a musician for the Manitoba Theatre Centre and CBC TV from 1964 to 1965. In 1967 Condie moved to Vancouver where he worked as a sociologist at the University of British Columbia. Cordell Barker
Cordell Barker (born 1956) is a Canadian animator based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He began animating in his late teens after taking on an apprenticeship at Kenn Perkins Animation. A two-time Academy Award nominee, Barker is an animation filmmaker with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). National Film Board of Canada Earlier in his career, Barker did animation work on fellow Winnipeg animator Brad Caslor's NFB short, '' Get a Job''. He then went on to direct his own NFB animated shorts, at the NFB's Winnipeg studio. His best known NFB shorts are ''The Cat Came Back'' (1988) and ''Strange Invaders'' (2002), both of which received Oscar nominations. He completed his third film for the NFB, ''Runaway'', in 2009.
